emple Beth El of Bloomfield
Hills will welcome Rabbi
Mark Miller as its new lead
rabbi during a Shabbat service Friday,
Feb. 28, that is open to all.
He succeeds
Rabbi Daniel B.
Syme, who has led
the congregation
for 17 years. Syme
will continue to be
an active member
of Temple Beth El,
Cit*
Rabbi Miller
focusing on special
projects, including
Mitzvah Meals and Humble Design.
"We are excited and honored to
have someone of Rabbi Miller's expe-
rience, stature and enthusiasm join-
ing Temple Beth El and leading our
congregation into a bright future
said Dr. Raymond A. Rosenfeld,
Temple Beth El board president. "His
focus on youth and his commitment
to building a vibrant Jewish commu-
nity will be an important ingredient
in our future
Miller comes to Beth El from
Congregation Beth Israel in Houston,
where he has been associate rabbi for
seven years. He has been instrumen-
tal throughout his career in develop-
ing innovative worship, expanding
social justice opportunities and
presenting creative and meaningful
education for all ages.

Before being ordained at Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion in 2007, Miller spent 11
years directing Jewish summer
camps — first at Shwayder Camp
in Colorado, then at the Wilshire
Boulevard Temple Camps in Los
Angeles.
In Houston, Miller served as
president of the Houston Rabbinical
Association, Federation board mem-
ber, clergy chair for the Metropolitan
Organization, member of the
Institutional Review Board for the
University of Texas Medical School
and a speaker for many local organi-
zations.
Currently, he is part of the national
core team for the Union for Reform
Judaism's Just Congregations initia-
tive, a long-time board member for
Livnot U'Lehibanot, the Rabbinic
Advisory Council member for Fair
Trade Judaica and a member of the
President's Rabbinical Council of
HUC-JIR.
Miller, his wife, Rachel Ann,
and their two sons will live in
Birmingham.
On Feb. 28, the evening will begin
with a "Pre-Neg" welcome reception
at 6:30 p.m., followed by Shabbat
service at 7:30 and an Oneg Shabbat.

ADL's Foxman Announces
His 2015 Retirement

A

braham H. Foxman will
step down from his posi-
tion as national director of
the Anti-Defamation League on July
20, 2015, bringing to a close a 50-year
career in Jewish communal service.
"For almost five
decades, ADL offered
me the perfect vehicle
• to live a life of pur-
pose, both in stand-
ing up on behalf of
the Jewish people to
ensure that what hap-
pened
during World
Abraham
War
II
would never
Foxman
happen again and in
fighting bigotry and
all forms of oppression," Foxman said.
"We have never lost sight of the fact
that we are an organization whose first
priority is to fight anti-Semitism and
protect the Jewish people. I'm proud of

all that we have accomplished"
Foxman is a Holocaust survivor who
was hidden as a child during the war,
and who later immigrated to America
with his parents. During his tenure, ADL
continued to grow, now with 30 regional
offices across the United States and an
office in Israel. ADL celebrated its cen-
tennial year in 2013.
Foxman has become world-renowned
for his passion in taking courageous
stands on behalf of the Jewish people,
for his leadership in confronting the
forces of anti-Semitism and for his warm
embrace of global leaders who see eye-
to-eye with ADIs mission of standing up
to intolerance.
Effective with his retirement, Foxman
will become ADL director emeritus,
serving on both the ADL National
Commission and the ADL National
Executive Committee in addition to
serving as a part-time consultant.
