Drachler began his Jewish communal career in 1956 as secretary of the Jewish Welfare Sol Drachler Federation's education division. From there, he rose through the professional ranks of federation before becoming its executive director in 1976. He held that position until 1982. In his honor, friends of Drachler established the Sol Drachler Chair in Jewish Communal Studies in 1998 at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work. In 1982 remarks honoring Drachler, com- munity leader Max Fisher said the following of him: "In troubled years, when the burdens carried by Israel and the Jewish people were their heaviest, they always knew they could rely on the people of Detroit to do their part. It is no accident that this community has the finest reputation in the country, both for fundraising and organizational unity. This enviable position was not created in a vacuum: It took leadership and vision to cre- ate. Sol Drachler has provided both, and he has brought, additionally, the imagination and skill to tap the best lay leadership this community has to offer:' The Detroit Jewish News Foundation is an independent, 501-c-3 nonprofit entity that supports the educational mission of the Jewish News.
