A

s the saying goes, if love is blind, marriage can be
quite the eye-opener. Once my husband handed
me a bouquet of flowers and said proudly, "This
shows how I feel about you:' I unwrapped them and — I'm
not joking — all the petals fell off.
Moral of the story No. 1: If you pay less than $3 for a dozen
roses, you're not supposed to give them to anyone
you actually like. Two, if you do, don't use them to
"show" anything. Objects can't express your feelings
for you; if anything, they might have subtle awkward
messages.
I mean, everyone gets chocolates for Valentine's
Day, but what exactly is that saying? "I believe you
could stand to gain a few pounds:' Or perfume. "You
could use a little enhancing in the aroma depart-
ment:' Or flowers. "They're nice to look at, but they'll
die soon"
I know a man who really loves his wife. He got her
a Weight Watchers membership. That's a gift that
truly says, "I love you and want you to live long and
be healthy because you do such a good job of wash-
ing my underpants:' (Although to be honest, it took her a little
while to see it quite that way.)
Deep down we all know that true love isn't something that

JN CONTENTS

can be expressed in only one day. It's a constant state of giv-
ing, and that doesn't apply to material objects. In fact, the only
"paying" that is really needed to display love is when you're
"paying attention:'
It's the small things that add up, the light touch on the shoul-
der, the look in the eye, the smile, the willingness to listen and
to have a closer peek at daunting personal extremi-
ties and reassure your beloved that, no, you don't
have anything stuck between your teeth.
It's time to think out of the (gift) box. There are
words out there that ooze love even more than the
very words "I love you." For example: "I'll do the
dishes" (to which the competitive lover might reply,
"I'll do the dishes MORE.").
Love is like a garden; it can be beautiful and fra-
grant, but it takes a humungous amount of work
from everyone involved. It's also so individual,
there's no one size that fits all. Some people adore
being spoiled on random days, but others hate that
they're effectively celebrating a holiday that is all
about spending money and much prefer to get choc-
olates on the 15th when they're all 75 percent off.
Either way, love is always worth recognizing and appreciating.
It's your pick, Happy Valentine's or Happy Shmalentines. ❑
