fitter cold and snow didn't
put a chill on the 15th Texas
Hold'em poker tournament
Jan. 26 hosted by the Pisgah-Zeiger
and Bloch-Israel B'nai B'rith lodges.
Spokesman Rick Sherline said 50
players competed in the Teen Center at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Plus, there were five attendees who
came for dinner and to hear guest
speaker Lynn Henning, a sports col-
umnist from the Detroit News.
The numbers were comparable to
prior tournaments, which is good news
for the B'nai B'rith sports leagues that
benefit from the fundraising event.
The tournament champion was
regular participant David Jaffa, who
also was a big winner in the competi-
tion two years ago.

And at last year's tournament, as
each player was eliminated, he or she
picked a number for a raffle prize.
Jaffa had luck with him, too, taking the
grand prize — a 40-inch flat screen
television.
This year, the top six finishers won
cash.
Runner-up Allen Rusgo and his
brother Steve Rusgo are regular players.
"One of them usually makes the
final table Sherline said.
Nancy Grobbel finished third. She's
played in most of the tournaments.
Tournament newcomer Jeffrey
Cohen was fourth. He was invited to
play by regular player David Kam.
Larry Frommer was fifth. A regu-
lar player, he invited Greg and Dana
Daniels to participate and Greg
Daniels finished sixth. ❑

T

hirty young adults came
together to learn about the
Israel Defense Forces as part
of ZOAs new young adult division,
Israel in Focus.
Tal Zirian, a guest speaker from
Israel who served in a special unit in
the IDF, and ZOA-MI Director Kobi
Erez, who also served in the IDF,
spoke about what it takes to be a sol-
dier in Israel, the difference between
conventional war and guerrilla
fighting, the Israeli army's tactics to
protect civilians and IDF spirit and
values.
The participants then headed out
to play paintball games that were
geared toward working as a team
under pressure. Daniel Talmid of Oak

Park, who participated in the event,
said, "The IDF is fascinating; we
didn't have an army for 2,000 years
and now we have the IDF, which
should be a source of pride to Jews
worldwide. Paintball is the closest
thing to a real battle. Getting hit can
hurt a little, so I can't imagine how
soldiers must feel in a real battle!"
Andre Reznic of Southfield also
learned from the experience. "We
learned firsthand how difficult it is to
make a split-second decision under
pressure — something the IDF is
trained to do in order to protect civil-
ians — even when doing so might
endanger the soldiers:'
