ith all the talk of the polar
vortex, blizzards and below-
freezing temperatures, why
not transport yourself to a Parisian
bistro! French fare like cassoulet (the
French version of cholent), simple
roast chicken with root vegetables or
endless varieties of quiches are perfect
cold weather dishes. Let's not stop
there though. What better to accom-
pany these classical French dishes
than some delicious French wines?
Pierre Miodownick is perhaps the
most versatile winemaker working in
France today and is the genius behind
Herzog Selections, one of the best val-
ues in French wine. Try pairing your
roast chicken with a bottle of Herzog
Selections Chateneuf ($16-$18) —
it's a classic. Chateneuf is a light,
fruity semi-dry white wine made
in Bordeaux that's easy to drink. Or
try pairing a cassoulet with the new
Herzog Selection Chateneuf Rouge
($16-$18), a light and fruity red wine
that will stand up to the hearty meat
and bean stew.
For those who prefer fuller-bodied
wines, try Herzog Selections Delagrave
Red ($16-$18), a traditional Bordeaux

blend that has nice blackberry, currant
and plum flavors and goes perfectly
with hearty cassoulet. On the other
hand, the roast chicken will be
complemented magnificently with
Herzog Selection Delagrave White
($16-$18) — dry, crisp, with fla-
vors of apples and gooseberries.
While not made in France,
Pierre's new Israeli winery,
Domaine Netofa, is all French
in attitude. Domaine Netofa
Is:, 1.. Red ($25-$28) has flavors of
- cherries, strawberries, black
currents and spice; and it tastes
just like it was made in France's
Rhone Valley. Or try Domaine
Netofa Blanc ($25-$28), a Chablis-
style white that's minerally with
intense notes of citrus fruits.
Either way you go, both the red
and white are a perfect match
to a rich cheesy quiche.
These wines are all available
at One Stop Kosher Market and
Spitzer's Judaica in Southfield
and other fine wine stores
throughout Metro Detroit. ❑

"I'm thrilled by the warm reception
from these wonderful organizations, and
I'm looking forward to working with
those involved to enrich Jewish life in the
city:' said Pinson. "We are a small popula-
tion, and we need to work together to
maximize our impact and contribute to
community building in Greater Detroit."
Hillel of Metro Detroit and Repair the
World are assisting with the event
"The Jewish community in Detroit is
diverse and growing, and the spiritual
and social needs of Jews in the city can
only be met if the resources down here
continue to grow and diversify:' said
Rebecca Hurvitz, FADS member and
organizer of the event.
