Temple Israel Praised
For 'Diversity Journeys'
Kudos to the JN for the article "Diversity
Journeys" (Jan. 30, page 18) highlight-
ing visits by suburban Detroit students
to Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. And
much gratitude to Gail Katz and Rabbis
Ariana Gordon and Jennifer Kaluzny for
educating the young folks who visited.
I would love to read about more engage-
ment of this kind. Schools have come a
long way in approaching subjects like
Holocaust education, by reading and
discussing timeless and telling books by
wonderful authors, such as Anne Frank
and Elie Wiesel.
However, this was a hands-on effort at
helping students to see, hear, feel, taste
and even touch Judaism in a way that I
am sure that all of us hope they will long
remember.

Detroiters Show Their Love
For The People Of Israel
It may be cold outside, but the warm and
caring hearts of so many from our area were
recently showcased in the Jewish News.

Todah rabah (thank you) and kol haka-
vod (great job) to all who helped sponsor
seven Magen David Adom ambulances,
two Magen David Adom medicyles, para-
medic training scholarships and more in
2013 to ensure that Magen David Adom's
teams are well-trained and well-equipped
to provide their world-class emergency
medical care.
Many of the vehicles are already en
route to Israel including the ambulance
honoring the 48 young adult MDA volun-
teers from Michigan. It will be stationed
in our sister area at the Migdal HaEmek
station. ("Celebration Of Life Jan. 2,
page 13)
We are most grateful for all of our sup-
porters and wish to extend a heartfelt
mazel tov to the Goodman family, our
past honorees, on their business accom-
plishments and philanthropic efforts that
benefit so many here and in Israel ("Men
Of Steel," Jan. 9, page 1).
They are truly beacons of light to us
all.

ou have heard of Captain
America, Batman and
Superman, but have you ever
heard of Captain Tov? The Adventures
of Captain Tov comic strip made its
debut appearance in the Detroit Jewish
News on Nov. 10, 1950. As he greeted
his readers from atop his trusted steed,
"Mazel," Captain Tov rode the plains of
the Negev desert to protect Israeli set-
tlers from dastardly marauders.
The adventures of Captain Tov (the
alter-ego of Josef Steinmerz) were

brought to life by three veteran news-
papermen: Joe Harrison Fried and
Henry W. Larson wrote the stories, and
John Belcastro created the illustrations.
The Captain's last adventure was on
March 30, 1951, where he is offered a
new unnamed, mysterious challenge
after apprehending his last evil desper-
ado. As he flies off into the clouds from
mythical AT'EL Airport, Captain Tov
also flew into the pantheon of comic
strip super heroes.
