Celebrating its 54th summer,
Walden is a co-ed overnight
camp in northern Michigan for
ages 7-17 in the state's Lower
Peninsula on a pristine 150
acres outside the city of Che-
boygan. Walden stretches along
Long Lake, a clear, sand-bottom,
spring-fed body of water where
campers do activities in just
about any watercraft you can
imagine. As a traditional sum-
mer camp, Walden offers a huge
range of activities in addition
to the waterfront, from sports
and arts to horseback riding and
theater. Walden campers roast
marshmallows, sing songs, star-
gaze and drink "bug juice." And
they do not-so-traditional stuff,
like mountain biking, lapidary
and yoga. Kids choose their own
classes and, with the guidance
of a committed and highly pro-
fessional staff, find out what it's
like to be "on their own" for part
