wenty-five years ago, Libby and

Art White of West Bloomfield wel-
comed the first campers to Summer
Impressions day camp. Since then, thou-
sands of children have spent their summers
at the 5-acre camp in West Bloomfield on
Middlebelt Road just south of Long Lake.
Summer Impressions, accredited by the
American Camping Association, offers
children ages 3-14 a variety of activities
and opportunities to grow emotionally and
socially in a fun-filled environment
"We pride ourselves on having a warm,
caring and supportive environment. We
give our campers an experience that will
help them expand their talents, make new
friends and develop life skills needed to be
successful in the 21st century',' said Libby
White. "We provide children the opportu-
nity to have the greatest summer imaginable
—the best summer, every summer."
State-of-the-art facilities offer all of the
activities of a "country" camp within easy
reach of major communities. Facilities
include two heated in-ground pools, profes-
sional junior tennis courts, miniature golf
course, basketball courts, two playgrounds, a
rock climbing course, challenge trail, Ga-Ga
courts, theater, fitness course and sports
fields. In addition there is an arts and crafts
building, camp store, arcade room and air
conditioned buildings.
Campers participate in sports, arts and
crafts, science and nature, and creative dra-
matics along with field trips and sleepovers
for the older campers.
The Whites have extensive experience as
educators and feel it is imperative to stay
abreast of what children really like today.
"During the off season, we focus on the
continual development of our progressive
program. Each summer we add to or change
our activities, events and facility to keep
the program fresh and exciting for all ages:'
Libby White said.
Recent years have seen the addition of a
game room and arcade, complete with video

games, pinball machines and computers.
Also new are a bounce house, water slides,
Ga-Ga court, miniature golf course, rock
climbing wall, Summer Stock Theater Camp
and S.I. Safety Town.
Special visitors are brought in each year,
such as last year's Renaissance Festival show.
"There were guys on unicycles, and jugglers
and people that ate fire!" said one camper.
S.I. Specialty Camps are a huge success.
Faye Blatt of Oak Park, former counselor
and now a parent, says, "My daughter loves
to do the Summer Stock Theater camps. She
has done four sessions. They get to create
their own scripts and costumes"
Campers are divided by age into "three
camps under one sky" assuring a satisfying,
fun adventure every day. Preparation for
future sleep-away camps is an underlying
goal at Summer Impressions, too. Certain
activities and events, including the popu-
lar field trips, Friday night sleepovers and
Leaders in Training mentoring program
(11-14), encourage and develop responsi-
bility, independence, leadership and good
sportsmanship.
Professionally trained specialty directors
in each area lead the way. All swimming
and pool activities are under the guidance
of Red Cross water safety instructors. Staff
members range from certified teachers to
college students majoring in education or
a related field. The majority of the staff has
been with Summer Impressions for years,
which parents like.
West Bloomfield resident Jane Foreman's
daughter has attended Summer Impressions
for six years. "We love it',' she said. "They are
so flexible and offer many different activi-
ties. There is room for creativity and for her
to grow. I like that I can talk to the directors
every day when I pick up and drop off'
To accommodate the needs of campers
and families, Summer Impressions offers
flexible scheduling over a 12-week camp
season. They also offer an extended day for
parents at no additional charge.
