A Loving Mother And Grandmother
S
ylvia Tina Segall, a former long-
time Detroit and West Bloomfield
resident, died in Denver on Jan.
22, 2014, following a stroke.
Sylvia was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.,
on Nov. 15, 1921, to Joseph and Bella
Stangel, European immigrants. She and
her brother, Harold, grew up in Brooklyn;
and Sylvia met Sol, a Detroit native
and graduate of Central High School,
at a Chanukah party. They married in
Brooklyn when she was 18 and moved
around the country for several years, as
Sol, a U.S. Army sergeant, was transferred
to various military bases during World
War II. They eventually settled in Detroit,
where they raised their family.
In retirement, Sylvia and Sol moved
to San Jose, Calif., in 1992. They both
enjoyed the California lifestyle, making
new friends, playing golf, swimming,
joining clubs and enjoying their grand-
children. They enjoyed senior activities
at the Jewish Community Center and a
local synagogue. Sylvia loved to cook and
bake for her family, as well as read, sew
and travel with Sol in their motorhome.
Taking the grandchildren "camping" was
a special joy for them. They enjoyed visit-
ing their children around the country in
their motorhome.
Sylvia worked as an administra-
tive assistant at the Sholem Aleichem
Institute. She valued her family and her
Jewish heritage; she was very proud
that all five children completed their
religious education by graduating from
Hebrew high school. She was president
of Hadassah and B'nai B'rith chapters
in Detroit and her Hadassah chapter in
San Jose. Sylvia and Sol also made many
lifelong friends through their three Jewish
camping groups in Detroit.
Sylvia graduated from high school
two months after her 16th birthday.
Unable to attend college due to the Great
Depression, she stressed education to her
children, who made their mother very
proud because "they all chose professions
that help other people."
Her grandchildren describe her as witty
and loving, someone who knew how
to make each of them feel special. She
baked special mandel bread and mailed
it to them in college so they would not be
hungry. She asked each grandchild their
favorite colors and then surprised them
with beautiful hand-crocheted blankets.
Sylvia always made Sol laugh, well
into the twilight of their lives; and even
though she left New York as a young
adult, she never lost her Brooklyn accent.
Sylvia felt it was important to treat
