Crave Sushi And Sake?
Enjoy world dining delights at a fine Dearborn restaurant.
p
OTPOURRI
It may not be a sushi or
Japanese eatery, but Crave res-
taurant, celebrating its 10th anniversary
on Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, is noted,
among other dining ambitions, as having
one of the largest and best lists of authen-
tic sake imported from Japan to imbibe
along with its eclectic menu presentations.
Also, Crave owner
Khalil Ramadan is so
enamored with sushi
from his many travels to
sectors of the world that
his eventual ambition
of owning a restaurant
was realized with elegant
Khalil
American, etc., food
Ramadan
and a concentration of
the finest Japanese sushi
assortment available.
Khalil's excellent selection of sushi,
vegetarian dishes, fish, chicken, steak and
Mediterranean choices have their own
identities.
IT HAD BEEN TAKEN over by new
owners ... Work might have had to be
done ... Improvements may have been
needed ... And to cap it off, the restaurant
is located away from a beaten path.
But thankfully, the new proprietors of
Franklin Grill on Franklin, in Franklin
Village (across from the fire station)
weren't the type to stand still.
Because of perseverance by Jim and
Ruth Kochensparger, the previous sleeper
eatery they bought has been turned into a
good neighborhood destination restaurant
that has received many accolades for its
home-style dining presentations.
New customers coming back are a
restaurant's best recommendation ...
Franklin Grill now enjoys this reputation.
SOON GOING INTO only its second
year, customer acceptance of Prime 29
Steakhouse and Seafood restaurant, 15
Mile, just east of Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield, has been so overwhelmingly
received that it has designated
February as its customer appre-
ciation month.
Every week in February ...
Sundays through Thursdays ...
a different four-course dinner
will be featured ... Appetizer,
soup or salad, entree and des-
sert ... $35 per person.
First week, prime New
York strip steak or salmon ...
Second week, prime filet or
chicken ... Third week, braised
short ribs or Chilean sea bass
... Fourth week, rack of lamb or seafood
symphony.
Reservations are suggested but not
required for these fine offers.
GOOD SERVER DEPT. ... Gina Ahnen
... A big favorite and asked for many
times at Pepino's restaurant, Walled Lake
... Her gracious smile, fast efficiency and
personable ways have easily made her one
of Michigan's finest waitpersons ... Truly a
credit to the fine staff of servers at popular
Pepino's.
READER MINI REVIEW ... From
Dennis Silber ... "We had a Michigan
get-together with many old friends at
Henry's restaurant on Jog Road in Delray
Beach, Fla., and enjoyed some of their
staple specialties. Several of us had the
8-ounce grilled salmon with a maple/mus-
tard glaze, accompanied with a steamed
medley of broccoli, carrots and squash.
This was a Monday evening, and others
had their truly scrumptious Southern
fried chicken, a weekly classic, crunchy
and mixed white and dark meat, and with
each order came macaroni and cheese and
mashed potatoes. On other nights, Debbie
and I have also enjoyed Henry's typical
specials like chicken pot pie, rosemary
grilled lamb chops and baked chicken
rigatoni.
"Henry's menu is varied with home-
made flatbreads, grilled main courses
and lots of delicious classics like turkey
and mushroom meatloaf and
calves liver and sauteed onions
that our little Michigander
get-together has delighted in
on other occasions."
SURE IT STILL HAS
barbecued, etc., choices, but
the surge of Mexican dining
that has even oozed into the
breakfast fields, has also taken
hold at Brass Pointe, Orchard
Lake Road, north of 10 Mile,
Farmington Hills ... Its bur-
ritos, enchiladas, botanas,
nachos, etc., are still available ... Along
with the popular broasted chicken, prime
rib, steak, etc. ... It even has stuffed jala-
peno appetizers.
TO THOSE WHO can't think of what
restaurant was at the location before
Fishbone's on Northwestern Highway,
north of 12 Mile, Southfield, it was Carlos
Murphy ... The northwest Fishbones is the
sister eatery of Fishbone's on Monroe in
Greektown, Detroit.
THERE ARE EIGHT La Marsa
Mediterranean restaurant locations ... Six
in the northwest area, one in Ann Arbor
and another in Brighton ... All serve both
Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food ...
The La Marsa in Sugar Tree Plaza on Orchard
Lake Road, West Bloomfield, is at the former
site of Giorgio's and three other eateries.
TAKE IT FROM Gigi, my little French
poodle, that photographer lady sure knew
her stuff ... But Gigi knows only that
Marcia Nodel came to the house and took
her picture years ago.
When it comes to her food, however,
which Gigi never tasted, all she knows is
that Marcia keeps winning awards.
Her latest was winning the pickles
category as Marcia's Munchies Sweet 'n
Sassy Pickles received top award in the
2014 Good Food Awards in San Francisco,
with Alice Waters, many times called the
mother of American food, world-noted
chef, author and executive chef, founder
and owner of Berkley, Calif.'s prestigious
Cafe Panisse, one of the hosts.
Marcia's pickles, caramel nut crunch
popcorn, etc., are at Papa Joe's, Peter's
Palate Pleaser and Market Square markets
... Too bad Gigi is a dog ... She'd love all
those natural gourmet snack goodies that
Marcia makes ... a variety of pickles, pop-
corn, fancy nut mixes and jams.
ONE OF THE FINALISTS on the recent
2014 opening of the American Idol TV show,
Sam Woolf is the grandson of former local-
ites Dental Doc Roy Woolf and wife, Jackie,
with whom he lives in Bradenton, Fla.
Guitar-songster Sam (Sammy Joseph)
was born in the Detroit area and is named
after his great-grandfathers here, the late
Sammy Woolf and Joe Miller.
"When it comes to music:' says Roy, "he
is a chip off one of his great-grandfather's
block:' referring to the wonderful local
orchestra leader Sammy Woolf.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT. ... Fellow
at the bar turns to the man sitting next to
him and asks, "Where are you from?"
The gent answers, "I'm from Ireland:'
The fellow's eyes widen as he replies,
"Me, too! What part are you from?"
The second gent replies, "I'm from
Castletown, near Phoenix Park:'
The first fellow says, "Me, too! What's
your grandmother's name?"
The second fellow says, "Dorothy."
"Wow! Mine, too!"
About that time, a new customer walks
into the bar and asks the barkeep, "Hey,
Mac, what's new?"
The barkeep replies, "Nothing much.
The Thompson twins are drunk again:'
