When your health concerns can't wait.

What steps can I take to keep my family safe and healthy during the winter months?

This time of year we see quite a few patients with knee, hip, rib and head injuries caused by slipping on icy surfaces. The freezing and
thawing of ice caused by the application of salt or the sun can give a false sense of security when walking on pavement. Be aware of
the surface you are walking on and don't take anything for granted. Wearing the wrong footwear often causes injuries. Even if you
need to quickly clear a path on your driveway or walkway before leaving for work, don't do it in your dress shoes!

With the extreme cold temperatures we have been experiencing, it's imperative to protect your skin from potential frostbite. As little as
five minutes of direct exposure with wind chill factors in the -30° range can cause frostbite to occur. We lose about 70% of our body
heat from our head, so wearing a hat is very important in preventing the quick onset of hypothermia and other cold related injuries.
Tobacco use causes our vascular system to constrict, which may also lead to increased potential for frostbite in our hands and feet.
Don't forget to keep plenty of hand sanitizer readily available and wash your hands as frequently as possible when outside the home
to avoid potential contamination and exposure. That's the number one thing you can do to protect yourself from viral and bacterial
related illness exposure.

Is it too late for me to get a flu shot?

It is not too late to get a flu shot, although its range of effectiveness continues to diminish quickly over the next several
weeks. It generally takes about two weeks for a flu shot recipient to gain effective immunity from the vaccine and we
are just about at the peak of our flu season right now. It's definitely not too late and certainly not harmful, but the
ideal time to get an annual flu vaccine is between September and November. This provides you and your family with
the greatest level of immune protection.
