But not quite the way he imagined. Daguanno, a Grosse Pointe na- tive with a background in film and graphic design, wanted to invest in a beautifully crafted custom suit for his wedding. He enlisted the help of Max Schmidt, his best man (and friend since third grade), who was running a small tech firm in Chicago, to research fabrics and tailoring. "Everywhere I looked for custom measurements, the price was pretty high," Daguanno says."And if the price was lower, the quality went with it' The pair, both 26, directly con- tacted a handful of Italian fabric mills, renowned for their luxurious wool flannels, linens, silks and more — eliminating the cost-adding American sales reps. They formed an LLC to work with the vendors and created their own suits for the wedding party. The exquisite results propelled Da- guanno to convince Schmidt to leave Chicago, which he did without much coaxing, so the friends could work full time as custom clothiers for men. Their business, 1701 Bespoke, of- ficially launched late in 2012. Bespoke is a British term that referred to men's clothing that was measured, cut and tailored on the premises. A looser, more modern idea is that the fabric is cut to a specific pattern for a client — similar in ways to women's haute couture. "We've been interested in style and menswear for a long time. When we were younger, we thought it was shallow to worry about our appear- ance,"Schmidt says."As we got older, we started thinking about how we were presenting ourselves and how we wanted to be perceived. The way I look is a snapshot for everyone who first meets me:' The partners have devoted themselves to learning to measure impeccably, understanding how a suit is meant to fit and all the details that entails. After measurements have been taken and fabrics have been chosen, the fabric and pattern are cut in Europe, then go to a local tailor before coming back to 1701 for final pinning and markings. "Having an eye for design trans- lates into the world of menswear," Daguanno says."When we are fitting someone for a garment, we under- stand how the proportions work, how it will lay on the body and how to take it from two-dimensional to three- dimensional' Adds Schmidt,"There is some- thing very special about putting on a custom suit, especially if you are accustomed to wearing clothing off the rack. There's no describing the difference in how that feels' When a first-time client comes in, Daguanno and Schmidt first recom- mend a navy, charcoal and/or gray suit before getting into more spe- cialized styles, like pinstripes. 1701 Bespoke also offers custom jackets, trousers, shirts and overcoats, and plans to expand into other menswear and accessories. In addition to guiding clients toward what suits their build and style the best — single-breasted or double- breasted, pleats or no pleats — 1701 offers any number of sartorial details, including full-canvas construction, handsewn buttonholes, felt-lined col- lars and, in a nod to Italian tradition, a handbraided flower loop behind the lapel. Also in a nod to tradition, this one local, and as a proclamation of their investment in the city of Detroit, the 1701 in their name refers to the year the city was founded. Testing the waters last October, 1701 Bespoke opened a highly successful three- month pop-up shop in the First National Building; the pair currently works out of office space in Detroit's Chrysler House while looking for a permanent storefront Downtown. "We love being in Detroit,"Schmidt says. "We wanted to reflect the authenticity of the city in our brand, and we want to be a part of this re- vitalization that's happening. We are proud of where we are from' 1701 Bespoke suits start at $727. Schedule an appointment with 1701 Bespoke by visiting 1701bespoke.com or calling (313) 444-3680. www.redthreadmagazine.com
