As they got on the elevator, they were curious about the five boys in stage costumes boarding the freight elevator. "We came back from dinner around 11, and the hotel was surrounded by people. They would only let you into the lobby if you had a key. As we walked down the hall to our room, we saw a few open doors and could smell popcorn. We asked a girl standing in the hall, 'Who are these people?' She said, 'That's the Jackson 5: She men- tioned that they travel with their own chef and don't eat regular food, and after a show, they only eat popcorn. But they were hungry. "Muriel said, 'Tell them we have some cheese and prosciutto in our room if they want it' Five minutes later, there's a knock on our door. The girl said, 'Randy (Jackson) wants to know what's prosciutto: Muriel told her. A little while later, the girl came back and said he couldn't have pro- sciutto but would like some cheese, so we gave it to her. "By the next night, we were friends. Randy introduces us to Michael and all the crew. Well, it happened to be my 65th birthday. A little later, I was in the bathroom, and Muriel said these guys wanted to see me. I came out in a shirt and tie and shorts. And there they are — the Jackson 5 — singing 'Happy Birthday' to me. "We made a date with them. They were coming to Detroit. I asked them what they missed most when on the road. They said swimming and basket- ball. I said, we have a basketball court and a swimming pool, and you're wel- come to come over. "They said they would as long as it didn't rain. If it rains, they don't fly. They were coming from St. Louis. Well, it rained, but they did get us front-row seats. The kids got to meet Michael. They all went crazy:' A Life Of Friendships Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson was one of Bernie's treasured friends. "We became friends through fur- niture," Moray says. "I furnished his home. We would have dinner together, and he would have us sit in his box when we went to the games. He attended every charity event we ever pulled together and would donate items. Sparky gave Muriel a Cecil Fielder home run ball, and when he was elected to the Hall of Fame, he sent her some Hall of Fame mugs. We were good friends" Moray, who lives in Franklin, wor- ships at Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield, and his favorite charity is Friendship Circle. "I'm blessed:' he says. "I love my life. I love everything that's happened to me. My wife is my partner in everything I do. I believe in having a laugh every day." ❑
