Deciding to be a specialist in veterinary medicine is an even larger commitment. The American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) is the umbrella organization for veterinary specialties. Currently, there are about 40 approved specialties that require a rigorous quali- fication process following veterinary school graduation. Most require a one- year internship or two years of clinical practice before beginning a two- to three-year residency. Once the program is completed, the resident must pass an exam before earning the title of Diplomate to be considered a specialist in that particular veterinary area. Many veterinary specialists require a referral for new patients. Following treatment, the specialist may stay in close contact with the referring veteri- narian to provide ongoing treatment. The growth of the numbers of vet- erinarian specialists is determined by animal owners demanding the best of diagnostic and therapeutic expertise for their pets and the willingness to pay for those treatments.
