percent, or 147,000 people, bringing the
country's total population to 8.1 mil-
lion, according to data from the Jewish

Hadassah Installs Officers,
Names Annual Honorees
The Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah
recently installed its 2014 officers at a lun-
cheon at Wabeek Country Club. According
to the organization's new president, Nancy
Bechek Bluth, "There were lots of positive
feelings in the room, and several women
said they would like to be more involved
with Hadassah because of the friendly
atmosphere'
Four women who have all contributed
in extraordinary ways to Hadassah were
honored. Fran Heicklen was presented
with the National Leadership Award; Toni
Schwartz was named Woman of the Year;
and Sandy Gruca and Sue Korn were the
Love of a Lifetime Honorees.
Outgoing President Joan Chernoff
Epstein was applauded for her work on
behalf of the organization, followed by
the installation of Bluth, who described
Hadassah as being "about people, about
changing lives, making the world a better
place ... It is focused on health, education,
from other countries. The most sig-
nificant rise was in the number of
immigrants from France, with 3,120
French Jews moving to Israel in 2013,
a 63 percent jump from the previous
year (1,916). The largest group of immi-
grants, 7,520, came from the former
Soviet Union. Some 2,680 immigrants
came from the United States.

T
Named Pre-Campaign
Chairman for 1955
o say the least, Max Fisher
was an icon in Detroit. In par-
ticular, Fisher was one of the
city's leading philanthropists on behalf
of Metro Detroit's Jewish community
and the State of Israel. By 1955, Fisher
was heavily involved in Jewish social
organizations, serving as treasurer of
the Jewish Welfare Federation, as a
member of the board of Sinai Hospital,
as the chairman of the Jewish
Federation's finance committee and as
the leading spokesman for the United
Jewish Appeal Study Mission.
Fisher's legacy as a supremely effective
fundraiser for Jewish causes received a
significant boost when, as reported on
the front page of the Jan. 14, 1955, issue
of the Jewish News, he was named the
Allied Jewish Campaign pre-campaign
chairman. In subsequent years, Fisher
was named chairman of the Allied
Jewish Campaign and led the Campaign
to record-breaking fundraising drives. ❑
