the boycott of
academic institu-
tions in Israel
that was recently
endorsed by
several academic

"While we
affirm the right
of individual faculty, faculties and
professional academic associa-
tions to hold and express different
viewpoints, we believe academic
boycotts violate the principles of
academic freedom and freedom
of speech, which are fundamental
to our missions of education and
research.
"The University of Michigan
is committed to continuing and
strengthening its long-standing
and productive institutional rela-
tionships with Israeli universities
and institutes. Many of our facul-
ty and students have exciting and
productive collaborations with
counterparts there."
The statement cited student
exchanges with the Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology,
an alliance with Ben-Gurion
University in renewable energy,
and a groundbreaking collabora-
tion in the biomedical sciences
called the UM/Israel Partnership
for Research that involves the
Weizmann Institute of Science,
Technion and Tel Aviv University.
Wayne State University
denounced the boycott in a state-
ment that says WSU "strongly
supports the principles of aca-
demic freedom and freedom of
speech"
The statement also said, "It is
our view that academic boycotts
are not appropriate means to
... resolving deep and complex
human issues plaguing the Middle
East.
"... We value our relationships
with universities throughout the
Middle East, including in Israel.
These universities all contribute
to the creation and dissemination
of knowledge, and we believe they
deserve the respect and support
of the international academic
community, as we would wish to
be respected and supported in
turn:'
