Today, the family business is a group of
seven related companies, each serving as
a profit center, all under the Eaton Steel
Bar Co. umbrella. The companies include
Hercules Drawn Steel Corp., Apollo Heat
Treating & Processing, Atlas Trucking,
Atlas Logistics and Titan Metallurgy
And through the economic downturns,
the company has prospered. Over the past
two years, Eaton Steel has expanded its
presence on Capital Street in Oak Park,
adding more than 100,000 square feet of
warehouse and office space.
"When Mark and I first started in the
business, our company was very small
compared to our competitors:' Gary says.
"Back then, there were maybe 50 plants
like ours in the United States. Today, there
are 10 or 15. Many went out of business or
consolidated. We've continued to invest in
the latest technology, and we're now one of
the largest in what we do:'
The company produces cold-drawn
steel bars and distributes hot-rolled steel
bars for the automotive, heavy truck,
agricultural, mining, and oil and gas
industries.
One of the company's newest additions
at its Oak Park facility is a 5,000-square-
foot, on-site health club. The club is free to
employees, who go through a qualification
process before participating. The club has
four trainers available, Zumba and yoga
classes, a weight room, treadmills, a floor
exercise room and showers.
Anticipated benefits include healthier,
more attentive employees, as well as
potential health insurance savings and
employee loyalty. The company recently
was named by the Detroit Free Press as one
of the Top Work Places in Michigan.
Members of Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield, the Goodmans are active in
the Jewish community. The family hosted
the 2013 Goodman Family Challenge
fundraising campaign for the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. The
family also contributes to Magen David
Adom, Israel's national medical, emer-
gency and ambulance service, as well as
the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces,
the Holocaust Memorial Center, Project
Chessed, Hebrew Free Loan, Jewish
Vocational Service, Detroit Institute of
Arts, Detroit Zoo, Detroit Symphony
Orchestra and Michigan Humane Society.
The Goodmans celebrated the com-
pany's 60th anniversary with a celebration
at the Detroit Zoo for employees and their
families. Employees received member-
ships to the zoo. The family hosted a sec-
ond celebration on company grounds for
customers and suppliers. "We had about
350 guests from all over:' Gary says.
What's next for Eaton Steel?
"We want to continue to grow:' Mark
says. "Gary and I are the two older people
now We love this business. I'm not going
to retire. What would I do? I play golf,
but am I going to do it every day? I'd go
insane. This place gives us focus. It keeps
us mentally sharp:'
Jeff says his father and uncle are "just
hitting their stride. In my view, they're the
best they've ever been:'
Like his father, he says, "I always knew I
wanted to be in the business:' adding that
his father neither encouraged nor discour-
aged his involvement.
"I was told if this is something I would
like to do, then let's go about it with a plan
so you have the right tools to be successful
at it:'
That led to Jeff's studies in metallurgical
engineering.
And there may be a fourth genera-
tion involved in the business some day.
Says Jeff, "Our 3-year-old son Dutch is
already a car fanatic, so I'm sure he'll
make his way into metal. He's definitely a
Goodman:'
