speaker: Steve Spreitzer,

S

oon-to-be-bride Elana Averbuch had a wonderful
time trying on bridal gowns last week with her resi-
dents who love her like a granddaughter.
Averbuch is resident service coordinator for Jewish Senior
Life's Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza in West Bloomfield,
and several special, grandmotherly residents accompanied her to
David's Bridal in Novi.
"I feel as if they are all my bubbies," says Averbuch, who next
June will marry Rabbi Daniel Schwartz of Temple Shir Shalom in
West Bloomfield. "I wish my grandmothers were here. This is the
next best thing. It was really a wonderful day:'
Although she earned her college degree in early childhood
education, Averbuch gravitated toward working with older adults
because of the closeness she had with her own grandparents.
Every day, she says, she learns something new from this older
generation.
The women who went wedding-dress shopping with her
included Dolores Wulff, Mollye Berman, Evelyn Glasson, Shirley
Plotnik and volunteer Jodi Weiss. The ladies shared stories of
their own wedding dresses and that magical moment when
they found the gown they knew they'd wear down the aisle.
Connecting about their lifelong loves and their "Mr. Rights" con-
nected generations, Averbuch says.
One of the women is 96 years old. Averbuch is a friend of the
grandchildren of another. With each one, she says she feels a
special closeness.
"Daniel and I both love living and working in our Jewish com-
munity:' she says.
The pair met a year and a half ago courtesy of two separate
fix-ups, one by Jodi Weiss, who joined last week's shopping spree.
Schwartz proposed Sept. 30, with long-stemmed roses, rose-
bushes and birds of paradise, along with iPads lining his resi-
dence to record the proposal.

Seated: JSL residents Dolores Wulff, Mollye Berman, Evelyn
Glasson and Shirley Plotnik. Standing: JSL volunteer
Jodi Weiss and bride-to-be Elana Averbuch, who works at
Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza.

He led Averbuch down a flower-lined hallway to a Shutterfly
scrapbook of their relationship, which ended with a page asking
her to marry him. "Then he got down on one knee," she says.
The wedding will be June 8, 2014, at Temple Shir Shalom, with
transportation and seating already arranged for JSL residents to
join the celebration.
"We at Jewish Senior Life realize how special older adults are
Averbuch says. "We want our residents to feel at home; a safe
place where they can enjoy an enriched quality of life. A place
where they can live up to their full potential and experience
social enjoyment everyday. That's what the purpose of this shop-
ping trip was — enduring relationships that make life so much
more meaningful."
