Digging For Purple

Honoring Applebaum

A group of archaeology students from
Wayne State University led by Professor
Krysta Ryzewski, in partnership with
Preservation Detroit, undertake an
archaeological dig at Tommy's Bar on
Third Street in Detroit. The team turns
up evidence that the bar's basement was
once used as a speakeasy by the Purple
Gang, a group of Jewish gangsters during
Prohibition.

Eugene Applebaum
Federation's
highest honor
that recognizes
an individual's exceptional impact through
volunteer leadership and philanthropy.
Applebaum's generosity has been shared
with the Jewish Community Center,
Wayne State University, Beaumont hospi-
tals and many other institutions.

Google Glass Goes Jewish

Local Detroit Chabad Rabbi Yisrael Pinson
brought Google Glass to Campus Martius
in Downtown Detroit Aug 16, where he
helped Jewish passersby use the device to
see a slideshow about tefillin, instructions
on how to place them on the arm and
forehead, as well as the Shema paragraphs
to recite. More than 50 individuals took
advantage of the opportunity to fulfill a
Jewish ritual requirement and to sample
the Google Glass that day.

Living Legacy

A sapling from Anne Frank's famous
chestnut tree was planted Aug. 27 on the
grounds of the Holocaust Memorial Center
Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington
Hills. The HMC was one of only 11 sites in
the United States chosen for the honor by
the New York-based Anne Frank Center
USA. The HMC held a public dedication
of the Viola and Garry Kappy Frank Tree
Exhibit and Garden on Sept. 22.

Novi Pediatrician
Heads To Jail

Longtime Novi pediatrician Jeffrey Lee
Dembs, who was arrested in November
2012 and charged with three counts of
criminal sexual conduct with a child under
age 13, pleaded no contest to three lesser
charges. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Farm Fresh Closes

Birmingham Temple
Marks 50 Years

Farm Fresh Market in Oak Park, an
important part of the community for
those who keep kosher, closed its doors.
Chef Cari's Kosher Catering has relocated
to Congregation B'nai Moshe in West
Bloomfield.

The Birmingham Temple celebrated its
50th anniversary since the late Rabbi
Sherwin Wine founded Humanistic
Judaism. The Temple also welcomed its
new rabbi, Jeffrey Falick

Haifa Versus Pistons

Federation held a Jewish Community
Night at the Palace of Auburn Hills
to welcome Maccabi Haifa, the Israeli
League 2013 Champions to Detroit to
play the Pistons. More than 500 commu-
nity members watched the game.

New Royal Oak Moishe House

I

It didn't take long after the July closing
of Detroit's Motor City Moishe House
until another one popped up, this time in
Royal Oak. Josh Stewart, Ben Goutkovitch,
Jordan Rosenbaum and Josh Fishman
settled into a brand new Moishe House on
North Washington Avenue.

MJI Scrutiny

The Michigan Jewish Institute, Chabad's
worldwide college in West Bloomfield,
came under scrutiny by the Jewish
Forward, which said "it may close after
failing to win accreditation:' An investiga-
tion by the Detroit Jewish News failed to
reach the same conclusion. The school
announces plans to build a new facility on
its West Bloomfield campus.

280,000 pages of Detroit Jewish News con-
tent from the last 70 years. The archive, at
