His college classmate Jeff McCoy was fine-tuning his knack for grinding golf clubs. While in high school, McCoy bought a grinder from a hardware store and, while in college, would apply his skill to improve his friends' clubs. "Jeff would visit me in Oregon, and we would talk about making and selling a better golf club," Techner says. "Neither of us thought this would get as big as it has. We thought it would be a sideline as we were working as golf pros." In their first week, they had orders for 250 wedges. They quit their jobs and have been making and selling clubs ever since. Cristie Kerr, one of the top golfers on the LPGA Tour, uses Scratch Golf wedges. In 2012, the company's sales totaled $1.5 million. Scratch Golf's competitive edge is its customized approach, says Techner. "We shape our clubs by hand to fit your game," he says. "Some are designed for golfers who hit the ball steep, others for those who hit the ball low. We can also work a different bias if you tend to hit the ball left or right. Most other companies just get the finished club heads from Asia and shaft them up." While Scratch Golf has customers on various pro tours, Techner says, "Frankly, I think we can help the mid-to-high handicappers more than we can a low handicapper. The high handicappers tend to do the same thing wrong almost every time, so you can set their club up to fight against that tendency. The best players can make anything work. They might save a stroke a round with custom clubs, which is a big deal, since it's a lot of money. A high handicapper might start playing five or six shots better with custom clubs." Techner says golf club fittings have come a long way in the last few years. Scratch Golf uses a $15,000 high-tech machine to analyze golf swings. "If you get the right equipment, and you're not fighting it every time, it makes the game so much easier and more enjoyable," he says. The Scratch Golf sales office and fitting studio at 27723 Woodward in Berkley is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more about the company and its products, visit www.scratchgolf.com . ❑ sk.Nswavsag,,...C.o.
