Harry Kirsbaum Contributing Writer T ap tap tap tap tap, even though, tap tap tap, I have this stress and it's bothering me, tap tap tap, I completely love and accept myself, tap tap tap, and I honor all my feelings, tap tap tap tap. To most, the above chant with the subsequent tapping noise is mean- ingless. But to a growing number of devo- tees, it is a quick and easy way to reduce stress, anger and depression or to heal what ails you. Emotional Freedom Technique, founded in the 1990s by Gary Craig in his EFT Handbook, is based in Eastern medi- cine and works like acupressure, says Brenda Strausz Brenda Strausz of Southfield, a certi- fied EFT practitioner. "EFT is based on the premise that problems in the body are stuck energy," she said. "Eastern philosophy teaches that negative emotions are the result of disruptions in the energy system of the body. "We use our fingers to tap on vari- ous meridian points as we talk about our issues so they move through our energy system, and we often find that the tapping quickly and gen- tly releases pent-up emotions and allows more flow." The technique, easily found on YouTube, involved a series of finger taps on various parts of the head, face, chest and arms that open up the blocked meridians where qi, (life-energy) flows. Strausz discovered EFT when studying to be a relationship coach in 2000 from a member of her coaching group. "I took a workshop and felt its healing power immediately," said Strausz, who has a master's degree in clinical psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology in Farmington Hills. "That same year, I decided to become certified?' Strausz sees about 25 clients a week and gives workshops to differ- ent organizations. The treatments last between one session and several months, and it depends on the client. Her fees start at $100 an hour. "I can see someone for her fear of public speaking or flying, and one time is enough," she said. "People who need to work on core beliefs from childhood or who have been traumatized can work with me for months." Strausz belongs to a group of 12 certified practitioners in Metro Detroit who meet on a regular basis. Strausz is also certified in relation- ship coaching, hypnotherapy and Louise Hay's "You Can Heal Your Life" training. Increased Interest Because of shows like Dr. Oz and the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Internet, she said there has been a huge shift in consciousness regarding alternative therapy. "People are really open to alterna- tive therapies and see the benefits firsthand," she said. "They are finding that talk therapy can only go so far. EFT is awesome because it works at the energetic level to heal the sources of the underlying issues, which are usually from childhood. "After working thorough an issue using EFT, you come out feeling dif- ferent, and you actually are differ- ent:' she said. "Your gut is no longer telling you to behave in the old unhealthy ways?' Strausz's friend, Alie, who lives in Berkley, has been using EFT for more than a year. She's used self-help books and audio tapes in the past, which she didn't stick with long-term. "One winter morning, Brenda went through the process with me, and I've been using it ever since," Alie said. She taps on her own to center herself, "which results in a clearer picture of the big and little stuff in my life. I find it easy to use anytime, anywhere?'
