So it's no surprise the West Bloomfield resident said he's looking forward to his three-year term as president of the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation. _ _ Stuart Raider Raider took the reins from Jeff Cohen in October at the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. "I'm honored to be president:' he said. The foundation, founded in 1984, presents the Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational and Hall of Fame induction banquet each year and is a prolific fundraiser. The date has already been set for the 2014 Greenberg Invitational. It will be held June 9 at Franklin Hills Country Club in Farmington Hills. This is Raider's third year on the 20-member foundation board, and his first time as an officer. He was original- ly recruited to the board by David Blatt, the foundation's executive director. He said he's especially excited about his third year on the selection commit- tee for the Hall of Fame. As part of those duties, he had a phone conversation this summer that he'll never forget. He called his friend Dan Arnold and told him he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame in October. "Dan is 91. He's wanted to be in the Hall of Fame for a long, long time Raider said. "When I told him he'd made it, he cried and said that made his life complete. "How often do you get to make a phone call like that?" Arnold was a standout high school and college athlete in the late 1930s and '40s and a star basketball player in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. There's another interesting story concerning 2013 Hall of Fame induct- ee Rick Zussman. Raider said selection commit- tee member Steve Rosen ran into Zussman on a cruise last winter and learned about Zussman's outstanding tennis career. He was an All-Big 10 player at the University of Iowa and the recipient of a Big 10 Medal of Honor for excellence on the court and in the classroom. Those credentials and other accom- plishments opened the Hall of Fame doors for Zussman. Raider said it isn't surprising that inductees become emotional during their acceptance speech. "It's a big deal to have your plaque at Maple and Drake he said, referring to the Hall of Fame's location at the JCC in West Bloomfield. Raider said he attended the first Hall of Fame induction banquet in 1985. The inductees were Hank Greenberg, Bill Davidson, Benny Friedman and Harry Newman. "If you would have told me then that I'd be president of the foundation 28 years later, I'd have been very sur- prised:' he said. Raider, 54, is a 1977 graduate of Oak Park High School — he played foot- ball there — and a 1981 graduate of Michigan State University. He's vice president of Raider Dennis Agency in Farmington, an insurance and retirement-planning firm. He's also secretary and treasurer of the Greater Detroit Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and a former JCC board member, receiving the Young Leadership Award. Captain Cahn Congratulations to Western Michigan University sophomore men's tennis star Andrew Cahn, who was named a team co-captain for the spring dual match season. "It's a well-deserved honor; said Broncos coach Dave Morin. "Besides leading the way with his on-court success, Andrew is a low-ego guy and team player. He'll be a great extension of the coaching staff. With his work ethic and habits, he's a perfect reflection of the things our program holds most important" Cahn was an All-State tennis player at West Bloomfield High School. He was elected Michigan's "Mr. Tennis" for the 2011-2012 school year by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association. He led Western Michigan in singles wins in his freshman season, going 28-18. ❑ Send news to sports@thejewishnews.com .
