When your health concerns can't wait.

If I have the flu, when should I see a doctor?

This can be challenging for some people. Call your doctor right away if you are having any difficulty breathing (beyond nasal
congestion), chest pain, symptoms lasting more than seven days or a persistent fever (greater than 100.6) that will not respond
to typical treatments such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If you're unable to keep fluids down and have significant vomiting or
diarrhea, this can quickly lead to dehydration and would be a good reason to see your physician. Severe unrelenting headaches
associated with a fever and neck stiffness should not be ignored. These could be the early warning signs of meningitis, a life-
threatening complication of influenza.

If you can't get an appointment with your physician or don't have one, seek out a certified urgent care clinic that is equipped to
handle more serious cases, such as IV rehydration.

Are over the counter cold products helpful? When is the right time to use them?

There is certainly no shortage of available cold and flu remedies at any local grocery store or pharmacy. The big question is whether
any of these products will be beneficial or could they potentially cause unwanted complications? When considering some of these
medications, this would be a great time to consult with your pharmacist prior to making any purchase. They are very knowledgeable
about these products and can be very helpful in terms of determining any possible interactions with daily
medications you may take for other medical reasons. If you have found a particular product to be helpful
for you in the past there's certainly no reason why you can't utilize it once again. Whenever any of us are ill,
all we really want to do was get some much-needed relief and sometimes these products can be beneficial.
