ark Weiss has transformed
a practice session for the
Frankel Jewish Academy
hockey team into an afternoon his play-
ers will long remember.
Weiss, the team's coach, has arranged
a scrimmage game with 15-20 play-
ers from the MORC Stars, a hockey
program for developmentally disabled
youths and adults.
The game will be at 12:45 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Farmington
Hills Ice Arena, the Jaguars' home rink.
"I hope our guys gain an appreciation
for what they have and giving back to
people who don't have what they do:'
Weiss said. "And I hope they have fun.
If all goes well, I'll make this an annual
event.
"Based on initial contacts I've made
with our parents, they think the game is
a great idea.'
Weiss said he first learned about the
Stars several years ago through his son
Emery, who did a mitzvah project with
them when he was a student at Hillel
Day School in Farmington Hills, and
he's continued to be impressed with the
program.
Frankel is a Midget B team that plays
under the auspices of the Farmington
Hills Hockey Association in the Little
Caesars Amateur Hockey League.
Because it doesn't play interscholastic
hockey, the second-year team has play-
ers from other high schools besides
Frankel including Detroit Country
Day, Eton Academy in Birmingham,
Farmington, Northville, Novi Catholic
Central and University of Detroit Jesuit.
There are 15 skaters and two goalies
on the roster. Frankel is represented by
sophomore defenseman Ira Brown and
freshman forward Cole Levine.
This is Brown's second season with
the team, which does not practice or
play games on Shabbos.
Fans are invited to watch the scrim-
mage game and donate used or new
hockey equipment, except jerseys and
socks, to the Stars.
"We survive through donations:' said
Stars manager Andy Hannah. "We don't
charge our players to play, and they're
provided all their equipment:'
After beginning with seven players
seven years ago, the Stars now have 126
players, male and female, ages 6-42,

from across the Metropolitan Detroit
area and even Lansing.
Ice time is donated to them for
Sunday sessions at Eddie Edgar Arena
in Livonia and Fraser Hockeyland.
Their scrimmage games include an
annual get-together with the University
of Michigan club hockey team.
The Stars' head coach is former pro-
fessional hockey player Peter Ciavaglia,
who played for the Detroit Vipers in the
International Hockey League. The cen-
ter also played for Harvard University
and five games for the Buffalo Sabres of
the NHL.
MORC is an acronym for Macomb
Oakland Regional Center, the Stars'
major sponsor.
Fans who can't make it to the Dec.
15 scrimmage game and would like to
donate hockey equipment to the Stars,
who are interested in coaching or who
know a prospective player can contact
Hannah at (313) 215-6148 or andy@
morcstars.com.
Farmington Hills Ice Arena is at
35500 W. Eight Mile Road.
