acqueline Grabois and Mara
Gabrielle, in the touring Elf the
Musical, agree on their favorite
song from the show — "Just Like Him:'
The production number captures the
feelings of Buddy, a human mistaken for
an elf, transported to the North Pole and
then reunited with his family,
Detroit audiences will experience lots
of singing and danc-
ing when the musical
runs Dec. 3-15 at the
Detroit Opera House.
"This is such a
beautiful show about
family and relation-
ships:' says Grabois,
Jacqueline
30, who plays the part
Grabois
of Deb, secretary to
Buddy's father. "My
character adds to the
comic relief, and I'm
so blessed to be play-
ing her:'
Grabois, who real-
ized that acting was
a draw when she
Mara Gabrielle pretended to be Annie
while doing childhood
chores, wavered from her choice for
a time. Growing up in California, she
tried different schools before entering
the American Musical and Dramatic
Academy in New York City.
"I got cast in the national tour of
Shout! The Mod Musical and went on to
Hairspray, Avenue Q and Peter Pan:' says
the actress, who was nominated for a
Helen Hayes Award for Avenue Q. "After
this run of Elf, I hope to pursue televi-
sion work:'
Although she was not raised in an
Orthodox household, Grabois has
attended services at an Orthodox syna-
gogue. Single, she now is active with
the Conservative congregation B'nai
Jeshurun, where she attends Friday
night services and goes out to dinner
with friends when not touring.
"I'm convinced everyone will leave
Elf smiling," she says. "It really makes
people feel warm inside:'
Based on the 2003 film, the show
features songs by Tony Award nominees
Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin.
The script is by Tony Award winners
Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin.

Education Savings Plan (MESP) will
hold Elf Kids' Night with pre-show
activities beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the lobby of the
Detroit Opera House.
There will be opportunities to make
holiday crafts courtesy of Arts & Scraps,
interact with cast members and sample
free ice cream from Ferndale's Treat
Dreams while supplies last.
For Kids' Night, tickets for those 18
and younger are free with the purchase
of an adult ticket at full price in select
seat locations.
These activities for young people occur
as Gabrielle experiences her second year
with the tour. She previously appeared in
Detroit with a run of Shrek the Musical.
"Elf is a fun, splashy show, a holiday
musical everybody can enjoy regardless
of what they believe," says Gabrielle,
26 and single with several roles in the
ensemble. "There are huge production
numbers on huge sets, and the costumes
are beautiful:'
Gabrielle, who early on learned about
theater from family members who had
worked in stage productions years ago,
starts off as an elf, plays Mrs. Claus and
understudies one of the leads.
Her major training was at the Boston
Conservatory.
"I started as a baby model and did
television commercials and movies," she
says. "I transitioned into musical theater
while I was in high school. I've been trav-
eling a lot with different national tours:'
Among the shows in which Gabrielle
has appeared are Spelling Bee, Mack and
Mabel, Gypsy and 42nd Street. A role
in Prince and the Pauper placed her at
Radio City Music Hall.
"I feel like Elf is taking me to the next
level of my career as I find nuances
in my characters every night," says
Gabrielle, who had a bat mitzvah
and signed up for a trip with Taglit-
Birthright Israel, visiting a country
where she has many relatives. "Getting
to understudy one of the principals also
is a great experience:'
