Leah Rosen, 3, watches as her brother Nosson, 6, lights the candles.
F
or Toby Rosen, Chanukah
means old traditions like play-
ing dreidel and making latkes
with her children, rather than newer
ones like standing in line at Toys R Us
and checking the front porch, hoping
an online gift order arrives on time.
Like many other things the Rosens
do, each and every night of Chanukah
is centered around family. But even in a
household with eight children, it is not
centered around gifts.
"The Jewish custom was originally
to give money on Chanukah:' said
Rosen of West Bloomfield. "Gift giv-
ing is a take-off of what's going on in
the Christian world, so we don't give
gifts. On one night, we do give money,
Chanukah gelt."
Every night of the holiday, the fam-
ily — including Rosen's husband, Rabbi
Eli Rosen, and their children, ages
11/2-16 — gathers together to light the
Chanukah candles. "Then, every night,
everybody gets to choose a song for us
all to sine Rosen said.
"After that, everybody gets a treat.
One night my husband makes sufgani-
yot (jelly-filled doughnuts) with the
kids.
"We always make too many so we
bring them to our neighbors. One night
we all make cheese lakes and another
night potato latkes. We bake and deco-
rate Chanukah cookies together. And
there are always chocolate coins:'
Some nights include guests, like fam-
ily, friends and out-of-town visitors.
"Singing in the dark by the light
of the menorah is my favorite part
of Chanukah," said 10-year-old Sora
Rosen. "I like it because we are all
together and we play dreidel, and I love
the latkes."
One night during the holiday is
always reserved for a party made for
Rabbi Rosen's students at the Mesivta of
West Bloomfield. The family relocated
from Toledo, where the school was
previously based, when the Mesivta, a
boys' high school, moved to Michigan
in August 2010, a convenient change for
the Rosen children who had been com-
muting to Yeshivas Darchei Torah in
Southfield every day.
"Having the boys in our home is
always cause for excitement:' Rosen
said. "The kids all help cook and serve
and prepare for the 10 students, who
are all 16-years-old:' Six-year-old
Nosson, the only boy among seven sis-
ters, joins them.
"The boys sing and eat and eat more
and sing again:' she said. "Nosson just
loves being a part of it. From the time
he wakes up that day, he asks every 10
minutes if it's time yet for the party:'
Just like on other days, Chanukah is
a time of sharing and teaching in the
Rosen home.
"When the kids play dreidel, the big
ones show the little ones what do to:'
Rosen said. "When we make cookies,
the older kids help the smaller ones put
them into the pan and tell them what a
good job they're doing:'
The Rosen home may be hectic and
busy and noisy on a normal day, and
even more so on the holiday, but that's
the plan.
"Being together, cooking, baking,
singing — that's how we celebrate
Chanukah:' Rosen said. "I love it, and I
wouldn't want it any other way:' ❑
