See You At Southwest Holiday Fest.

t is a truth increasingly acknowl-
edged — universally elsewhere
— that great neighborhoods
make great cities. And have I got a
great one for you! I'm admittedly
new to this neighborhood, but I
knew it was
the perfect
place for Re-
pair the World
to hang out
our shingle.
While the area
proudly lies
within the
boundaries
of South-
west Detroit,
Mexicantown
and Hubbard-
Richard, it has
a unique physi-
cal and social geography that, like
New York's DUMBO, merits its own
enclave name.
Here are some terrible suggestions:
1. BagBee. Bagley Street to Honey
Bee Market. Or BanksBee for the
Banksy street art that now lives at
555 Gallery.
2. BATS. Between the Bridge and
Train Station.
3. The Matrix. In honor of long-
time anchor Matrix Theatre.
4. Dos Puentes. The Ambassador
Bridge and the Bagley Pedestrian
Bridge, which heroically spans 12
lanes of 1-75 and 1-96.
5. Old 3rd. For the Former Third
Precinct Building that now houses
555 Gallery, Detroit Farm and
Garden, and Detroit Massage and
Wellness.
6. Mexican Village. People some-
times use Mexicantown and Mexi-
can Village interchangeably.The
latter is a restaurant, the oldest in
the neighborhood and the only one
east of the Fisher Freeway. Why not
honor its endurance over the last
half-century by naming this part of
Southwest Detroit Mexican Village,
a hamlet adjacent to but discrete
from Mexicantown to the West?
7. NESD. Northeast Southwest
Detroit.
8. Gabetown. For Gabriel Rich-
ard (of Hubbard-Richard, which is
pronounced Ri-shard, not Richard),
who came to Ste. Anne de Detroit
down the street in 1804 and, after
his school (and the rest of the city)
burned down in 1805, coined the
ever-popular Speramus meliora; re-
surget cineribus (We hope for better
things; it will arise from the ashes).
9. TriBeCo/NoCa. The Triangle Be-
low Corktown. Or North of Canada.

Southwest Holiday Fest

What's in a name? We can talk about
it over cider and cocoa and beer and
wine at the inaugural Southwest
Holiday Fest on Saturday, Dec. 14, be-
tween 3 and 9 p.m.You can see and
feel and taste and hear for yourself
what's special about this little corner
of Detroit. Here's a sneak preview:
•Enter the Matrix Theatre. You
missed Visiting Mr. Green (a play fea-
turing an elderly Orthodox retiree
and the young gay man who nearly
runs him over), but you can see Mo-
tor City Cabaret and Ballet Folklorico
perform. And Santa will be there.
The real Santa.
•Carol-aoke. You know the
words, even if you weren't allowed
or inclined to play in all their rein-
deer games growing up. Plus, you'll
have the spirits at Donovan's Pub
to make you sound fantastically
festive.
•Swap City.'Tis better to swap
than to give or to receive. At the
near-future home of Repair the
World's Workshop, you can do just
that. Bring clothes or whatever you
are hoping to find a good home for,
and rummage around to find your-
self something nice. Or just give. Or
just receive. (If you've got stuff you'd
like to drop off or you'd like picked
up before the big event, email me:
ben@werepair.org .)
•The Plaza. Formerly Mexi-
cantown Mercado Plaza, the Ford
Resource "Don't call me FREC"
Engagement Center will host a con-
cert, as part of a series sponsored by
Southwest Solutions, and a dance
performance by Living Arts.
•Detroit Farm and Garden.
Always supporting the local
landscape, DFG will host the 2013
Birdhouse Biennale and have lotsa
flora sorta for ya.
•555 Gallery. Check out the
artist market during the day and
their Naughty or Nice party in the
evening.
•Stroll like you mean it. Eat and
drink your way down the block with
familiar faces and new friends.
