Sponsored by metro >> Chanukah art contest 'Thanks For A Happy Chanukah' CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 ust before Chanukah is the best time of year here at the Jewish News offices. Every day, the mail brings wonderful artwork from local children that brighten our days. And on judging day, our offices become an art gallery, this year with more than 125 works on display. The talent we see is amazing, and every year it's a struggle to find our grand prize winner — there are so many worthy submissions that would look great on our cover! This year, we thought one submission captured the unique flavor of this year's holiday: "Thanks for a Happy Chanukah:' That winning submission is from Emily Tracht, 8, a third-grader who attends Keith Elementary in West Bloomfield. "Because Chanukah and Thanksgiving fall on the same day this year, I thought lip Toy SHOP SOLDIER (248) 543-3115 3947 Twelve Mile Road Berkley, MI 48072 it would be funny to make a turkey whose feathers were Chanukah candles:' says Emily, who lives with her parents, Debbie and Ryan, and siblings Noah and Jessica in West Bloomfield. The family belongs to Temple Israel. "I also want to say thank you to my grandma, Phyllis Rochen, who entered me in the contest:' Emily adds. Emily will receive $100. She plans to keep some of the money and donate the rest to the Red Cross, she says. She will also receive a $50 gift certificate for art supplies at Miller's Art Supply in Farmington Hills. First-place winners in our contest will receive $25 gift certificates to Miller's Art Supply as well. All winners showcased in this issue will receive $18. ❑ AGES 6 AND UNDER FIRST PLACE: Meir Shomer, 6, West Bloomfield SECOND PLACE: Meredith Shapiro, 6, Farmington Hills fi tkv.* 4 ONLINE WINNER: Emma Zwick, 8, Huntington Woods THIRD PLACE: Naomi Doppelt, 6, Huntington Woods Chanuakah Art on page 10 8 November 21 • 2013 JN
