S

tuart Hertzberg, devoted husband,
father and grandfather; dedi-
cated community leader; and well-
respected attorney, colleague and mentor,
died Nov. 4 at age 86.
Stuart, who resided in Novi with his
wife, Marilyn, earned a national reputation
as a leading bankruptcy and reorganiza-
tion attorney, first at Hertzberg, Jacob and
Weingarten, where he generously mentored
many younger lawyers, and later at the
Pepper Hamilton law firm, which his firm
merged with in 1989.
He was active in numerous professional
organizations, serving as president of the
Commercial Law League of America and
a director of the American College of
Bankruptcy. He was an active member of
the American Bar Association, where he
chaired many of the committees he served
on. He also received the President's Award
from the Metropolitan Bar Association, its
highest honor.
Bill Cohen, an attorney who began his
legal career working for Stuart and later
became one of his business partners, spoke
at the funeral service about his former men-
tor, colleague and close friend.
"Stuart was always well prepared, always
up to date on the issues, strong in his opin-
ions but always fair:' said Cohen, who was
also a cousin through marriage. "He was the
premier statesman, able to read people and

Nephew Larry Shulman spoke at the
funeral service about his "Uncle Stu' a man
with a brilliant legal mind and an unsur-
passed devotion to his family. He said his
uncle was like a second father to his nieces
and nephews, taking time to give advice
about career decisions and other matters.
He taught by example, demonstrating that
family was of paramount importance, no
matter how busy one became.
"He taught us to be passionate about
things that are important, not to be a
bystander ... but to get involved and help
