Left: The Kippah Kantor can "hide" while children are asleep and observe
the mitzvot they perform. Right: The Kippah Kantor and Kippah Kantor

Hanukkah doll and book set.

W

hen Cindy Hauk was growing up in Texas, she always wished for a
toy that had a Jewish connection. Now a mom with degrees in both
marketing and elementary education, she has created the toy that
she craved — and that she wanted her own children to have.
The Kippah Kantor and Kippah Kantor Hanukkah is a doll-and-book set
designed for Chanukah. The doll, a sweet little cantor wearing a tallis and kip-
pah, can be given to children on the first night of Chanukah, the perfect time to
read the accompanying simple yet meaningful story.
Throughout the holiday, the Kippah Kantor will hide around the house — on
a shelf in the pantry, on the mantel, in the laundry basket and more — and
each day, will watch his child to ensure that he is performing mitzvot, or good
deeds, and behaving in a kind manner.
When the child does perform a good deed, the Kippah Kantor discusses it
with the other neighborhood Kantors and goes back home to "hide" so the child
can hunt around the house for his friend. If the child does not behave kindly,
then parents can explain that the Kippah Kantor has disappeared and will
return only when he sees the child performing a good deed.
Children can form attachments to the doll as soon as the gift is given. On
the Kippah Kantor website, kippahkantor.com , kids can download and print a
special Kippah Kantor Mitzvah Award, and fill in the name they have bestowed
on their new friend. Families can also write messages on the website, describing
the good deeds they have performed, print out coloring sheets and puzzles, find
recipes and more.
"My goal is for the Kippah Kantor to help families have fun while learning
about mitzvahs:' says Hauk. "Hopefully, it will also add a little magic during the
season of Chanukah:'
