Future Plans
The Foundation, with its ongoing
work, hopes to protect the initial
investment by securing monies to
enable the content of the archive to
continue to be available, at no cost to
individuals, in perpetuity.
In addition, the Foundation is
looking into the digitalization of the
Detroit Jewish Chronicle, which pub-
lished from 1914-1951 before its assets
were acquired by the JN. Plans are to
provide a 100-year archive of content
available on the same digital platform.
There also are hopes to be able to
secure links from the Foundation
website to other sources of digitized
information, such as the Max Fisher
archives (housed at the Walter P.
Reuther Library of Wayne State
University), Holocaust survivor tes-
timonies (housed at the Holocaust
Memorial Center in Farmington
Hills) and cemetery records (housed
at the Leonard N. Simons Archive at
Federation).
How It Works
The Foundation website and portal
were constructed by Media Genesis of
Troy. The archival consultant is Mike
Smith. The content is currently housed
with Minnesota-based ArcaSearch.
The software used to access the data-
base is searchable by name, word
grouping, dates and more. (See next
story on page 14.)
"I am extremely excited about the
launch of the Detroit Jewish News
archive Smith said. As a historian
and archivist at Wayne State's Walter
Reuther Library, I have spent 20 years
collecting, preserving and researching
the history of Detroit, and in par-
ticular, the history of Detroit's Jewish
community. From this experience, I
can honestly say that the JN archive is
a unique and wonderful resource for
Jewish history, with very few peers in
Detroit or around the country. This
tells you why, as a historian, I am
indeed excited.
"Moreover, for our Jewish com-
munity, it is an outstanding resource
to preserve the history of families
and friends as well as the important
personalities and significant contribu-
tions that the community has made to
Detroit, the nation and Israel for today
and in the future. I am deeply honored
to have had a small role in the devel-
opment of the IN archive'
A brief video tutorial will assist
first-time users to navigate the site and
understand the search tools available.
Expanded search capabilities will be
introduced in coming months to fur-
ther enhance users' experiences.
Readers should note that the archive
will not include the most recent 13
months of content. To access that will
require the purchase of a Jewish News
subscription to the print and/or online
editions of the paper.
The Significance
The digital archive will not only tell
the continuing story of our com-
munity, but it will also capture in
detail the lives of tens of thousands
of Jewish Detroiters, their families
and friends. It will offer access to the
ideas of previous generations and
will not be affected by geographic
or demographic shifts in the Detroit
Jewish community.
With assistance from DJN
Foundation consultant Smith and
graduate students supported by M.
Jacob & Sons and the Techner fam-
ily, content from the archive will be
utilized to support symposia on an
array of topics of current interest
to the community. The Foundation
already has received inquiries about
receiving fees for researching and
assembling personal family histories
from the archive's content.
As part of the testing phase, sev-
eral readers received information
from the archive. They have reacted
positively.
