Young men come to aid of senior
struck by car in Oak Park.

I Special to the Jewish News
our Oak Park men came to the
rescue of an elderly resident hit by
a car last week.
On Monday evening, Oct. 21, Chuny
Mandel, Barry Speizer and brothers Dovid
and Shea Margolis were schmoozing
outside the Lubavitch Yeshiva just east of
the 10 Mile and Greenfield intersection.
Suddenly, they heard the bang of an impact
and a desperate cry for help. Rushing over,
they discovered an elderly man who had
been struck by a car while trying to cross
the road in the dark
"Luckily, the light hadn't changed yet;'
Mandel said. However, the victim was
sprawled partly in the middle of the lane, a
disaster waiting to happen. Shea Margolis
quickly called 911, while Mandel took off
the coat he was wearing and rolled it up so
the victim could rest his bleeding head on
something soft. The four did their best to
reassure the shocked victim that help was
on the way.
Once the light turned green and cars
approached, Dovid Margolis and Speizer
used the faint light of their cell phones to
wave oncoming traffic into the next lane.
They also had to explain why to some dis-
gruntled drivers. Shortly afterwards, the
police and ambulance arrived at the scene
and took over.
The victim, 70-year-old Max Leib, who

lives in the Prentis Apartments of Jewish
Senior Life on the A. Alfred Taubman
Jewish Community Campus on 10 Mile
Road, underwent back surgery to repair
vertebrae damaged in the accident.
According to his niece, Cheryl Stern
of Huntington Woods, Leib is currently
in rehab. Other souvenirs of the accident
include purple bruising around his eye —
and a ticket for jaywalking from the police.
"We can't give exception to one and
not the other; Officer Brenna Rouleau
of the Oak Park Police Department said.
Both pedestrian and driver were ticketed.
"Pedestrian in the roadway" is also against
the law.
"I think it's amazing that people would
run into the street and jeopardize their
own safety to come to the aid of others:'
Rouleau said. "It takes a special personality
to react in that manner"
Leib and his very grateful family agree.
"Major kudos to them:' Stern said, "and
also to the driver who hit [Leib] for coming
forward:' The driver had been driving with
a suspended license, no insurance and bad
plates; instead of hitting and running, the
driver chose to come forward and cooper-
ate with the police.
Speizer, Mandel and the Margolis broth-
ers, all in their 20s, are adamant they are
not heroes and didn't do anything out of
the ordinary.
"We were just at the right place at the
right time Mandel said.
