Little Daddy's Family Restaurant announces @umme01 ClicDGE TM 1c k)oCoTbil t1 Livonia! middle class. Beyond the economic issues, of course other issues are important, too. We need the right balance between defense and offense against the Iranian regime, until it eventually crumbles. We need sustainable borders between ourselves and the Palestinians. We need the right formula for integrating haredim (ultra-Orthodox) into the army and work force while having zero tolerance for discrimination and incitement against them. In what ways did your experiences in Jewish Detroit impact your current endeavors in Israel? Again, hugely. The Jewish education and environment in Detroit is superb, for those who want it. The warmth of the community is amazing. So many people I meet (who are not from Jewish Detroit) have lost contact with friends and family friends from childhood. Not so for us. For me — and for many others, I'm sure — it's amazing how much those connections are strong and alive. ...And how can anyone talk about the impact of a Detroit childhood without talking sports? I still follow our teams. I think most of us do. It sounds superficial, but it's a huge tie to Detroit. That Lions comeback against the Cowboys was unbelievable. How would you size up the most important issues that Israel must address? I'm in the camp that believes the economic and cost of living issues are paramount. Economic concentration threatens to bring us an oligarchy like Russia's — with all of the social and political consequences. And the erosion of Israel's middle class is an existential threat. Israel has survived for 65 years with a tough security situation. But Israel cannot survive a single day without a DEDTED co)gq As often as you like from I I Friday, 11/15/13 - Sunday, 11/17/13 I I Dine in/Carry out. For your entire party I Beverages not included. Israel, the Jewish element is all around you, so the mental energy can be directed outward, toward participating in a wider world. The former "New Big Daddy's" is now "Little Daddy's" More or less where it is today. I think the relationship may undergo changes, but over a longer time frame. These would be primarily due to demographic trends within the United States, especially the increase in the percentage of Americans with no religious affiliation (who tend to be less supportive of Israel) and the demographic changes within American Jewry (of which readers are very much aware). • Bloomfield Hills - Woodward At Long Lake 248-647-3400 • Taylor - Eureka Rd At Southland Mall 734-287-8600 www.littledaddys.Eom vx0 N G FINE CHINESE DINING 'A wonderful adventure in fine dining" — Danny Raskin What are your personal goals over the next decade in Israel? It's hard to say. For so long, I just imagined myself being here that aliyah itself feels like the realization of a dream. I already feel like I'm in the "world to come." What more is there to strive for? Of course, there's lots to strive for. Professional advancement, personal happiness. Being involved in the central debates and processes that will continue to shape the course and contours of Israel. And I want to continue to explore, to read, to debate, to travel. What would be your suggestions on the best way that a Jewish Detroiter could stay on top of news and policy decisions in Israel? Read. Friends in the U.S. sometimes ask for recommended news sources. I tell them there's no need. The Internet has a wealth of good journalism, and we're in a golden age for English- language journalism in Israel and the Jewish world. Part of the process is finding the sources for yourself, diving in. It reminds me of my third grade teacher at Hillel, Mrs. Tzeel. Sometimes one of us would tell her he or she couldn't do something. Mrs. Tzeel wagged her finger and leaned forward. She stared straight at us and switched from Hebrew to English: "Where there eez eh weeel, there eez eh wayyy...." If someone wants to keep up with events in Israel, s/he will find a way. ❑ 4-a Asir ha.; Pr rI !4i Open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner Catering and carryout available Gift certificates 27925 Orchard Lake Rd., North of 12 Mile, Farmington Hills 248-489-2280 www.honghuafinedining.com 18713 Restaurant Italian Cuisine 248.476.0044 Buy one lunch or dinner entree I and get the second 1/2 off 1 5 % off total food bill Of equal or lesser value Not good with any other coupons.
