tor Rebecca Rose Yates of
Livonia might need a stool to
reach the microphone at the podium
when she presents her book on the
morning of Sunday, Nov. 10, at the
62nd Annual Jewish Book Fair at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. After all, she is only 10
years old.
In Rebecca's book, The Daredevils
Meet the Zoo Team, an all-girls soccer
team suddenly finds itself on a magical
island and must face off against a team
of enchanted talking animals. They
have to work together to win the game
to earn their right to return home.
Yates, a fifth-grader in the gifted
"Tag" program at Dodson Elementary
School in Canton, said she followed
the same rule of many older published
authors of "writing about what you
know" In her young life, most of her
life experiences happen while wearing
soccer cleats.
Her book is a story about overcom-
ing life's challenges on and off the
soccer field. Yate's mother, Sheri Yates,
said her daughter was inspired at age
8 to write the book after reading the
book Winners Never Quit by soccer
star Mia Hamm.
"Rebecca has always loved to write
from a very young age Sheri said.
"At 5, she asked for her own journal
for Chanukah, and she's been writing
short stories and poetry ever since:'
It took Yates a year to write and
illustrate the book. Her mom scanned

the pages, colored whimsically with
crayon, into a home computer and
the book was published through the
CreateSpace independent publishing
platform. In addition to sales at the
book festival, the book also is available
on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Just as she was inspired by Hamm's
message of perseverance, Rebecca
encourages other kids who like to
write to follow their dreams.
"Don't ever give up. If people think
you can't do it, just try harder; she said.
When she is not writing her own
books or poetry, Rebecca loves reading
books like the Warriors cat series by
Erin Hunter and, of course, the Harry
Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
Book Fair Assistant Director Andrea
Roisman said the committee chose
Yates to speak because they were "fas-
cinated by her young age" and hope to
encourage other young readers to write
their own books by having her speak.
Other book fair programming
geared toward budding young writers
include "Bubbies, Bagels & Books"
with storyteller Helayne Shaw at 10
a.m., Sunday, Nov. 10, at the JCC in
West Bloomfield. Children ages 3-8
can listen to Jewish holiday stories
from around the world.
At 1 p.m., there will be a "Kids Can
be Authors, Too" presentation for older
children, where students in grades 3-8
from the Akiva Hebrew Day School,
under the guidance of the Holocaust
Program of Jewish Senior Life, share
the stories they wrote after visiting
local Holocaust survivors.
