Assistance in Living...
ABOVE AND BEYOND

Perry Ohren, JFS CEO, said the
grants are used to strengthen its staff-
ing in older adult services, counseling
services and intake.
"Federation's staffing grant, in addi-
tion to funding for financial and hous-
ing assistance, keeps Jewish Family
Service whole and helps us to provide
essential support to the community:'
Ohren said. "Even though we are five
years after a historic recession, and
many people's portfolios are doing
great, there are countless families in
our community who were devastated
by the economic downturn, remain
devastated and need Jewish Family
Service's help to make ends meet. This
demand will continue, and we will
need to continue to figure out how to
fund these essential supports moving
forward."

Help Abroad

Israel and overseas allocations received
$9,117,130, or 28 percent for pro-
grams to help Israeli Jews in crisis
in the Partnership2Gether region
of the Central Galilee. According to
Federation's Planning and Allocations
Committee report, 40 percent of adult
Jews in the region are unemployed,
and 33 percent of children live below

the poverty line.
Also allocated was $515,000 for
Federation's Israel offices in Detroit
and Jerusalem, which promote a
connection to Israel. The Israel and
Overseas Department organized 17
different exchanges and/or visits to
the Partnership region, involving 650
people. Another 22 exchanges are
scheduled for next year.
Douglas Bloom,
Federation president,
said the Annual
Campaign achieve-
ment is better, but he
isn't satisfied.
"I am never
satisfied with the
Campaign results or
Douglas
the amount we allo-
Bloom
cate he said. "My
feeling is that we can always do better
and always do more. I think the com-
munity is making a comeback, but it
is not fast enough or good enough if
you are out of work or without a place
to call home. The campaign achieve-
ment is better, but not good enough
to satisfy all of the community's
needs, and yet somehow we do man-
age to take care of the vulnerable, the
young and those in need of help."

Who Stands With Israel In South Africa?

outh Africa's current ruling
party, the African National
Congress (ANC), is among
those organizations that do not sup-
port Israel, calling it an "apartheid"
state. One South African politician
who is outraged by these efforts to
defame Israel,
however, is Rev.
Kenneth Meshoe,
a member of
Parliament and
founder and cur-
rent leader of the
African Christian
Democratic Party.
Rev. Kenneth
Meshoe will be
Meshoe
the keynote speak-
er at the StandWithUs-MI Festival
of Lights celebration Sunday, Nov.
24, at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills.
SWU-MI board member/found-
ing member Andre Douville, will be
honored for his support of SWU-MI
programs featuring speakers, films
and rallies for Israel. He is executive
director at Temple Shir Shalom in
West Bloomfield.
Ed Kohl is being honored as
the first recipient of SWU-MI's
Volunteer-of-the-Year Award. Since
retiring, he has put his energy into

nizations, including Volunteers for
Israel.
Meshoe will describe the efforts
he has led to counter anti-Israel
actions in his country, such as a
peaceful rally of 2,000 people dem-
onstrating against, and ultimately
helping to defeat, the attempt to pass
legislation to label products out of
Israel as having been made in the
"Occupied Palestinian Territories."
He knows the apartheid indict-
ment against Israel is what he polite-
ly calls "nonsense." As someone who
experienced real apartheid in South
Africa, he finds this outrageous.
Meshoe also sees Israel as a
country willing and able to help
South Africa overcome some of its
people's most pressing health and
economic problems.
He recently started a new initia-
tive — Defend, Embrace, Invest,
Support Israel (DEISI) — that
promotes how Israeli technology
and advancements can help South
Africans.
