n the face of an economy slow to
recover, the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit still was able
to increase allocations by 4 percent to
support the local Jewish community
and Israel.
This year, $32,543,750 will be
parceled out: $28,688,750 from the
Annual Campaign and $3.855 million
from the Goodman Family Challenge
Fund. The Federation anticipates
$856,250, or 2.75 percent, in uncol-
lected funds.
"I'm extremely
proud of our com-
munity:' said
Scott Kaufman,
Federation CEO.
"The growth in
allocations this year
reflects the amaz-
ing commitment
Scott
and generosity of
Kaufman
our donors as well
an increase in the vitality of the cam-
paign itself. For the third year in a
row, we've seen more individuals step
forward to support the Jewish com-
munity, and because of that our allo-
cations remain strong:'
While Jewish education and identity
building remained at basically the
same levels as last year, local agen-
cies that help at-risk Jews received an
increase in funding to make up for an
Urgent Needs Bridge Fund that was
expiring after three years.
The Fund was a grant put together
outside of the Annual Campaign by
some families who wanted to help the
agencies hire more staffing to be able
to meet the increasing needs of fami-
lies and individuals in crisis.
"We basically
shifted funds for
staffing from an
Urgent Needs Fund
to the Challenge
Fund, so we could
continue the urgent
needs staffing that
Linda
we had before said
Blumberg
Linda Blumberg,
Federation direc-
tor of planning and agency relations.
"The reality is the economy hasn't
improved enough to really cut back
on the staffing. It's kind of the new
normal:'
JVS received $1,249,380, including
$270,871 in staffing grants.
Jewish Family Service received
$2,836,997, including $472,497 in
staffing grants and $348,000 in hous-
ing and financial assistance.
