From November 29 947 until May 14, 1948 dozens names for the state
were suggested in letters
officials, and,in essays and
newspapers
editorials. Ordinary people as well as leaders of the Yishuv took part in this
debate, which captured public interest and imagination at a crucial moment
during the struggle for statehood. This lecture will explore these proposed
names from several viewpoints: historical, linguistic, and ideological.
