rhetoric, diplomatic efforts ought to be
made to see if the Iranians now led by
Rouhani will cooperate or not. If they fail
to deliver, then stronger measures are in
order, of course.
That reasonable approach apparently
does not suit Falbaum, who prefers to
associate himself with the hard right, with
reflexively pro-Israel "friends" like Rush
Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity,
Ann Coulter, Michele Bachmann, Michelle
Malkin, ad nauseam.
Frankly these people ought to make us
uncomfortable, to say the least.
So I would call Falbaum wrong ... again!

A Plea For Civility
In Political Dialogue
It is hard to believe 18 years have passed
since that horrific day when we were told
that that Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin was assassinated.
It was Shabbat afternoon here when
my husband, Shelly, informed me of the
shocking news.
First I assumed, rightly so, that that
awful act was perpetrated by an Arab
terrorist. But then I found out the more
shocking fact that it was done by a young
Israeli, Yigal Amir who was against Rabin's
politics viv-a-vis making peace with the
Palestinian Arabs.
That cowardly act, the very first in the
history of the State of Israel, took place
when the prime minister left a peace rally
in what was then called Kikar Malkhei,
Israel, later to be called Kikar Rabin —
Rabin Square.
In the extremely emotional memorial
to him, current Prime Minister Benjamin
"Bibi" Netanyahu spoke kindly of him

and of his quest for peace. Alas, the
atmosphere prior to the assassination was
one of virulent accusations and horrific
condemnation on the side of his political
adversaries, including in no small measure
by Prime Minister Netanyahu.
I remember how Rabin's widow, the late
Leah, refused to shake Netanyahu's hand
in her anger for what he said prior to the
murder. Let's remember that hateful words
can hurt and even in politics we can dis-
agree without resorting to the worst kind
of personal verbal attacks as was the case
then.
If there was one lesson learned from
that most awful event, this should be the
one.

Kudos To Michigan Women's
Hall Of Fame Honorees
Bravo, Judy Cantor!
Your nomination to the Michigan
Women's Hall of Fame is a well-deserved
honor ("Passion For History:' Oct. 10, page
26). I congratulate the Hall of Fame for
its prescience in opening its doors to my
longtime friend, a dedicated and talented
historian.
I would also like to remind your readers
of the Hall of Fame honors bestowed upon
the late Lillian Mellin Genser in 2002.
Lillian was an educator for peace,
an innovator in her field and nation-
ally recognized for her work as director
for decades of Wayne State University's
Center for Peace and Conflict Studies and
a relentless promoter of peace and conflict
resolution studies starting with very young
children.
