oftball in the fall? Why not?
The Intercongregational
Men's Club Softball League held
its first fall league at Keith Fields and
Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield
and by all accounts, the experiment was
a success.
Steve Achtman, who ran the league,
said there were 77 players on six teams.
Rosters were filled through a draft,
which meant players from different
temples and synagogues were on mixed
teams.
Family members could play on the
same team if they desired.
"Each of the 12 summer teams had
at least one player in the fall league
Achtman said. "Guys got to meet players
from other summer teams. From that
aspect, the league was great."
The regular season this fall consisted of
five Sunday doubleheaders for a total of
10 games.
Here are the final standings: 1. Marble
Rye (manager Richard Jacobs) 8-2; 2.
Dances with Softballs (manager Howard
Rosner) 6-4; 3. The Winners (manager
David Rubenstein) 6-4; 4. Bad News Jews
(manager Achtman) 5-5; 5. Kosher Ribs
(manager Jeff Kaplan) 3-7; and 6. Breaking
Bad Men (manager Marc Soble) 2-8.
Each team qualified for the playoffs,
held Oct. 13 at Drake Park, with Marble
Rye and Dances with Softballs receiving
an opening-round bye for their first- and
second-place finishes.
Bad News Jews didn't get a bye because
of its fourth-place finish, but it won the
playoff championship.
It beat Kosher Ribs 15-4 in the opening
round, Marble Rye 10-5 in the semifinals
and the Winners 16-12 in the title game.
While the league was competitive, of
course, there was a free substitution rule
that allowed a team to pick up players
from another team for a game.
"I didn't want to have any forfeits:'
Achtman said.
Each player paid $50 to participate in
the league. The money went a long way.
Besides paying for expenses and break-
fast the morning of the playoffs, $130 was
donated to the Jewish National Fund and
the Bad News Jews and the Winners play-
ers received $40 and $20 each, respec-
tively.
Also on the Bad News Jews roster were
Brandon Achtman, Randy Chudler, Ryan
Columbus, Barry Fishman, Jonathan
Fellows, Johnny Goldberg, Dennis
Horwitz, Eric Horwitz, Gary Klinger,
Howie Lupovitch and Brad Silber.
Also on the Winners' roster were
Kenny Walters, Justin Columbus, Victor
Uzansky, Ryan Schneider, Kevin Agrest,
Lonnie Pukoff, Brad Kallen, Howard
Wintman, Shai Grossman, Eli Cooper
and Jonathan Frohlich.
Steve Achtman sees the league growing
in future years.
"We'd love to have more teams next
year, maybe go from six to eight:' he said.
Meet the Honorees
They're remarkable student-athletes.
They're the Jewish News High School
Athletes of the Year and Bill Hertz
Memorial Scholarship winner and they
were slated to be honored Monday
(Oct. 21) at the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation's annual Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet
at the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Jennica Lurie from East Lansing High
School and Molly Gelb from Ann Arbor
Huron High School share the Female
Athlete of the Year award. Jake Slobin
from Farmington Hills Harrison High
School is the Male Athlete of the Year.
The scholarship recipient is Molly
Williams from Frankel Jewish Academy
in West Bloomfield.
All graduated earlier this year.
During the next few weeks, we'll
introduce you to the four honorees
through their accomplishments and
answers to questions.
Here's a sneak preview.
Jennica Lurie competed in gymnastics,
diving and pole vault in high school. She
was all-state twice in gymnastics, all-con-
ference twice in diving and conference
champion twice in pole vault.
Asked if she has sports superstitions,
here's what she had to say:
"In every sport, I had to do the same
ritual before it was my turn to compete or
I would psych myself out.
"In gymnastics, I had to stretch my
body exactly the same way before touch-
ing the apparatus.
"In diving, I had to wait a certain
amount of time before stepping onto the
board after the person before me went.
"In pole vault, I had to say certain words
to myself before I began running:'
