Suzanne Chessler

Contributing Writer

esse Palter has skirted the
issue of age.
Not very long ago, living
in Michigan, the jazz vocalist didn't tell
because of singing dates in clubs where
she would not have been allowed as a
minor.
Now, living in Los Angeles to advance
her career, the vocalist with her own
group thinks the subject is best avoided
in the interest of professional goals.
But Palter gladly talks about her two
current and favorite subjects — the
introduction of a new recording and
her engagement to Beverly Hills, Calif.,
chiropractor Bryan Abrams.
"My quartet will be giving the first
preview of the just-finished record-
ing Saturday evening, Oct. 19, at the
Berman Center for the Performing
Arts in West Bloomfield, and we're
going to perform the songs through in
sequence Palter says in a phone con-
versation from California.
"It will be a special show, and, always,
coming home is a spectacular experi-
ence. Feeling the energy of my Detroit
supporters translates into our perfor-
mance and improvisation:'
Palter's CD, Dealin' With, recorded
with funds raised through a Kickstarter
campaign, has eight songs written by
her and two arrangements of songs she
likes. The title track describes the out-
look of members of her group — getting
up on the bandstand and giving their all.
Hold My Hand' is a song very near
and dear to my heart:' Palter says.
"I wrote it for a friend who is going
through a very challenging time strug-
gling with addiction, and it was my way
of reaching out and being there.
"I wrote it with my jazz-group col-
laborator, Mike Jellick, a fantastic piano
player. It's a song to comfort myself and
that person. The message is empower-
ing and reassuring. Every time I sing
that song, I feel it in every fiber of my
body:'
"Spinning Round" is a fun, swing-
ing number about the thrill of life. "My
Sweetie and I" describes a charming
gentleman.

The

"I'm really excited because my first
recording with this jazz group was
released in 2006, say Palter, who has
written songs for her fiance but hasn't
recorded them.
"After going on the road and writing
a bunch of new music, I'm glad to get
it all out there. The numbers are about
experiences:'
Also appearing will be bassist Ben
Williams and drummer Keith Hall,
filling in for studio drummer Gregory
Hutchinson.
Palter, who includes Jewish events
on her performance schedule, traces
her vocal talents back to grandmother
Dorothea Raynor, a child opera singer.
Palter began her own singing pursuits
as a 5-year-old cast in local musicals
through Nancy Gurwin Productions.
A young piano student who also took
dance lessons, Palter went to Abbott
Middle School in West Bloomfield,
enrolling in the specialized arts pro-
grams, and graduated from West
Bloomfield High School.
A choir member and junior cantor
at Temple Israel, where she had her bat
mitzvah, Palter studied with Donald
Walden and Dennis Wilson at the
University of Michigan.
"We're in talks to have this recording
released on a major label, and I've been
working toward that my entire career;
says Palter, the daughter of Peggy and
Danny Palter of West Bloomfield.
"Everybody at the concert is going to
get a free download of one of the songs.
We're also going to offer a discount to be
used when the record does get released.
"I truly believe this recording is the
next level of my maturation as a jazz
vocalist and artist. Our whole approach
was to write music that sounded like
standards while bringing something
new to the process. It's a throwback
and also a progression:'

The Jesse Palter Quartet
celebrates its CD release with
a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday,
Oct.19, at the Berman Center
for the Performing Arts in West
Bloomfield. $22-$27. (248) 661-
