Ford Motor Co. Acquires
Software Startup Livio

F

ord Motor Co. is acquiring Livio, a
Ferndale.-based software develop-
ment startup, headed up by Jewish
entrepreneur Jake Sigal.
"It's a big win for all entrepreneurs in
Metro Detroit. Certainly a great way to
bring in the new year," Sigal said.
Livio is joining
forces with Ford amid
explosive growth in the
connected car market.
Last year, more than
1.9 million vehicles
were delivered with
smartphone integra-
tion solutions. That
Jake Sigel
number is expected
to reach 21 million
vehicles by 2018, according to industry
estimates.
Livio's software-based, advanced vehicle
information and entertainment solutions
improve the connection between software
and hardware. Now, they will help Ford
standardize the way customers connect
their smartphones to their vehicles.
At Livio, our philosophy is centered on
bringing customers more connectivity with
less hassle," Sigal said.

P.J. Cherrin, former
Detroiter of San
Francisco, Calif., has
been named regional
director of the Birthright
Israel Foundation in the
Pacific Northwest. He
has worked for the
Cherrin
Conference on Jewish
Material Claims Against Germany in New
York, the Jewish Community Relations
Council of Metropolitan Detroit and AIPAC
in San Francisco. He also founded a busi-
ness, Memoir Press.

Jason Teshuba,
Detroiter, linguapreneur
and CEO of Mango
Languages, has been
named vice president of
strategy for the National
Museum of Language in
Washington, D.C. He will
develop and lead the
long-term strategic plan for the museum
and work with its board and members to
enhance the overall brand of the museum,
whose mission is to inspire an appreciation
for the magic and beauty of language.

Livio, co-founded by Sigal and Massimo
Baldini, will be a wholly owned subsidiary
of Ford Global Technologies, which man-
ages all aspects of intellectual property for
Ford.
Livio will function as a separate depart-
ment within Ford Electrical/Electronic
Systems Engineering, while integrated into
Ford's overall connectivity operations. The
deal gives Ford access to a broad group of
application developers, while enabling Livio
to maintain its independent and entrepre-
neurial approach.
David Ruby, principal at global private
equity firm Beringea and a Livio board
member, said, "Livio is a perfect case of a
successful startup that was built and grown
right here in Metro Detroit and financed
with mostly local capital.
"Furthermore, Jake is a classic example
of a young Jewish entrepreneur, who was
supported by our community. This should
be inspiring to other young Jewish entre-
preneurs. The steps that Dan [Gilbert]
and Brian [Hermelin], as well as Beringea,
have taken to support growing business are
exciting and give me confidence that Metro
Detroit is a place where young innovative
companies can thrive:'
