T

he color purple is more than a
fashion statement this October;
it is part of the Big Purple
Campaign designed to raise awareness
about an issue that affects thousands of
women, men and children: domestic
abuse.
October, designated as National
Domestic Violence Awareness Month,
marks the start of a year-long initia-
tive sponsored by the Jewish Coalition
Against Domestic Abuse (JCADA),
with support from the Jewish Women's
Foundation.
Ellen Yashinsky Chute, JCADA coor-
dinator and Jewish Family Service chief
community outreach officer, urges the
community to show support by wearing
purple ribbons, putting up posters in
offices and retail establishments, and par-
ticipating in Purple Fridays.
According to Chute, wearing some-
thing purple on Fridays during October
is a way to show support for JCADA's
"Respect: Spread the Word" cam-
paign. Participants may win a $50 gift
card by uploading photos of themselves,
their friends, family or colleagues
wearing purple to the JCADA Detroit
Facebook page. Supporters also are
encouraged to download the "Jewish D
Stands Up Against DV" thumbnail and
use it to spread the word through social
media.
Domestic violence is the leading cause
of injury to women — more than car
accidents, muggings and rapes combined.
One in four women has experienced
domestic violence; a woman is assaulted
every 9 seconds in the U.S.; nearly one in
five teenage girls said a boyfriend threat-
ened violence or self-harm if presented
with a breakup; and at least three women
in the U.S. are murdered every day by
their husbands or boyfriends.
As shocking as these facts may be,
what is more shocking to some is that
they apply equally to the Jewish and secu-
lar communities.
JCADA is committed to educate,
advocate and raise awareness about this
destructive and pervasive issue.
Posters and purple ribbons are avail-
able from Jewish Family Service and
other participating organizations.
