metro >> around town Sukkah Success Beth Shalom families decorate their sukkah and enjoy events together. T he weather cooperated on Sunday, Sept. 15, for Congregation Beth Shalom's annual sukkah decorat- ing party. Twenty families, many including grandparents, got together in the synagogue's sukkah to paint pictures, make paper garlands and enjoy an afternoon together. The rain held off until after everyone enjoyed a pizza supper in the sukkah. Maddy Byun, 11, and her sister Abby Minor, 6, of Berkley, said they most enjoyed making paper chains, and Abby also liked wielding a stapler. Both said Sukkot is one of their favor- ite holidays. "They love watching their dad put up the sukkah and having picnics in there said their mother, Jessica Minor. The children had about 1,000 square feet to decorate. In 2011, the Beth Shalom suk- kah in Oak Park more than doubled in size, enabling the congregation to hold a variety of events there during the eight-day festival. On the second day of Sukkot, the congregation enjoyed a lasagna lunch. One of the Beth Shalom Men's Club most popular events is the annual Steak in the Sukkah, held on the Sunday of Sukkot. Rabbi Robert Gamer, an avid gourmet chef, delighted more than 50 attendees with his specialty steaks. ❑ This happy crowd drew Sukkot-themed pictures for the sukkah.
