Clash from page 30

Jordanian actress Najla Sahwil
recently said on P.A. TV that while
growing up, she "dreamt of playing
the part of that great personality
Dalal Mughrabi," who she described
as a "Palestinian female fighter."

No Easy Answer

Given their substantial hatred of
Jews will take at least a generation to
reverse, Palestinians largely justify
the use of suicide bombings, a new
Pew Research Survey found. Results
indicated 62 percent of Palestinians
justify suicide terrorism, the Zionist
Organization of America reports.
Since September 2000, the start
of the Palestinians' second intifada,
or uprising, more than 1,200 Israelis
have been murdered by Palestinian
violence and terror, according to the
Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his Sept. 24 address to the
United Nations General Assembly,
President Barack Obama acknowl-
edged that Israelis
had a right to
live peacefully
in the Middle
East and with
the recognition
of member U.N.
states, including
Arab nations. But
President
he cautioned that
Obama
Israel's "occupa-
tion" of the West
Bank was a fraying force for Israelis
as well as Palestinians.
"There's growing recognition
within Israel that the occupation
of the West Bank is tearing at the
democratic fabric of the Jewish
state he said.
Much is made of Israel's military
presence in the West Bank; little
is said about the reason. Without
the armed buffer, including check-
points and the security barrier,
Israel would lose its defense against
suicide bombers, snipers and
other violent infiltrators. Given the
Ramallah-inspired culture of hate
toward Jews, there's no evidence
Palestinian terrorists wouldn't step
up infiltration with freer passage
to Israel. Any peace accord surely
would allow for Israel Defense
Forces border protection.
Jews cherish life; terrorists don't.
On Yom Kippur, we remembered
the "whole household of Israel
and its martyrs" — namely, Jews
throughout history with martyrs
defined as people of virtue as
opposed to those who murder.
The hypocrisy of the Palestinian
infatuation with Mughrabi notwith-
standing, the Israeli-Palestinian
peace process is supposed to hinge

on a commitment by both sides to
desist from inciting.
Clearly, a Shahid, an Arab martyr,
who dies terrorizing and murder-
ing "the enemy" in Allah's name, is
praised, not decried. The reason:
Shahids are revered as heroes, role
models and bridges to a better life.
In an understatement, PMW
explains, "People who see life as
the supreme value have difficulty
understanding the mind of the sui-
cide terrorise
We sure do.
PMW goes on to say the
Palestinian Authority chose the
second intifada to apply the Islamic
tradition of shahada — effectively
mandating believers to die in com-
bat for Islam. "The P.A. told their
people this ancient tradition also
applies to them in confrontation
with Israel today:' according to
PMW.

An Uphill Battle

On a Sept. 16 visit to the JN offices
in Southfield, U.S. Rep. Kerry
Bentivolio (R-Milford) talked about
an August visit
to the Middle
East on behalf
of the American
Israel Education
Foundation — an
affiliate of the
American Israel
Public Affairs
U.S. Rep.
Committee
Bentivolio
(AIPAC).
He told of
entering the West Bank and being
greeted by a large poster extolling
Palestinian martyrdom.
"The Palestinian leadership that
Israel is supposed to negotiate with
is perpetuating the problem of
hate so kids can become martyrs,"
Bentivolio told me. "What's up with
that? It's not being reasonable.
"It's tough," he concluded, "vis-
iting a culture that wants to kill
Jews."
While the West views President
Abbas through a lens of relative
moderation, Abbas and his party
still harbor elements of the Islamist
belief that there's no place for Jews
in an Arab order.
Islamism is the political radical
form of Islam and thus distinctive
from the religion. Certainly, not all
Arabs subscribe to such a confron-
tational rejectionist doctrine. Some
Arabs have courageously renounced it.
Still, too many Arab leaders cling
to the continued glorification of ter-
ror — an impediment that no peace
agreement alone could ever hope to
overcome.
