Shriver To Talk Of His Father And Alzheimer's Disease M ark Shriver comes to Metro Detroit on Thursday, Oct. 10, to speak about his father, Sargent Shriver, and his new memoir, A Good Man, in an event sponsored by Jewish Senior Life, Alzheimer's Association-Greater Michigan Chapter and JVS's Dorothy & Peter Brown Adult Day Care Program. "It is our honor to have such a celeb- rity to speak about a topic that affects so many of us, losing that connection to a loved one due to advancing Alzheimer's:' says Rochelle Upfal, JSL CEO. Gayle Burstein of the local Alzheimer's Association says, "As more families are facing the challenges of aging issues, our collaboration and shared missions to support them through this process are increasingly important" Leah Rosenbaum of JVS, says, "Mark Shriver's message is a powerful remind- er about the importance of love and support in caring for family members with dementia." Sargent Shriver was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2003; he died in 2011. Mark Shriver's memoir depicts a won- derful father-son relationship, explor- ing the moral principles that guided his father. Married to Eunice Kennedy, Shriver was the force behind the cre- ation of the Peace Corps; he also cre- ated such programs as the Job Corps, Head Start and others. He was a U.S. Ambassador to France and ran in the 1972 presidential election as the run- ning mate to George McGovern. His son served in the Maryland House of Delegates for two terms. He is currently senior vice president of stra- tegic initiatives for the charity Save the Children. In his book and in his talks, Shriver presents the life lessons his father bestowed on him and shows how they apply to all.
