n Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Maccabi

Haifa basketball team plays a pre-
season exhibition game with the
Detroit Pistons.

Maccabi Haifa is the 2012-
13 Israeli Super League
champions. Now ranked
15th in Europe, it features
some of the best players

Power Hour from 6-7 p.m.;
discounts on food and
drinks; an on-court experi-
ence to Take a Shot on the
Piston's Court Postgame;
group photos on center
court; Piston's customized
"swag" given out at the

ticket sold will be donated to the Jewish

The Maccabi Haifa professional basket-
ball team of the Israeli Basketball Super
League has a long and storied legacy as it
was one of the original eight teams to form
the Israeli Premier League for the 1954
season. Under the ownership of American
businessman Jeffrey Rosen, the team was
crowned the 2012-13 league champion for
the first time in franchise history.

On its U.S. tour, the team will also play
the Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies.

Haifa Hoops For Kids

On Wednesday, Oct 9, in coordination
with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Maccabi Haifa players and coach-
ing staff will hold two bas-
ketball clinics for the Detroit
Jewish community to raise
funds for the team's "Haifa
Hoops for Kids" program to
benefit underprivileged chil-
dren and children with special
needs in Israel. Two hundred
middle and high school youths
will have a chance to learn and
play with the pros.
"Haifa Hoops for Kids:' a
charitable initiative between
Maccabi Haifa and United
Jewish Communities of Metro
West New Jersey, offers compa-
nies, individuals and organiza-
tions the chance to send under-
privileged children and children with spe-
cial needs in northern Israel to experience
a night of fun at a Maccabi Haifa game.
Maccabi Haifa has hosted more than
15,000 children at its home games, whom
otherwise could not afford the opportu-
nity to attend a professional basketball
game. The players also visit local hospitals,
including Rambam Hospital in Haifa,
homeless shelters, food banks, schools for
special needs children and schools for at-
risk youth.

B'nai B'rith Presents
Child Piano Prodigy
At Berman Center

Ethan Bortnick, a 13-year-old piano
prodigy, will be performing at the Berman
Center for the Performing Arts at the West
Bloomfield Jewish Community Center at 8
p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.
Bortnick started composing music at age
9, headlined a national tour at 10 and was
the youngest artist to headline a Las Vegas
show at 11. He performs jazz, classical,
rock 'n' roll and original pieces.
He co-wrote all of the songs and scored
all the background music for the full-
length feature film Anything is Possible.
The concert is sponsored by B'nai B'rith
Great Lakes Region in cooperation with
the JCC Stephen Gottlieb Music Festival.
All proceeds will benefit the Great Lakes

Program, which provides scholarships to
Michigan residents who are entering their
freshman year of college.
