THE ART SCENE

One of the founding members of the
Abstract Expressionists, painter Adolph
Gottlieb (1903-1974) abruptly shifted
his interest to sculpture in 1967. Ann
Arbor's University of Michigan Museum
of Art's new exhibition, Aldoph Gottlieb:
Sculptor, running through Jan. 5, brings
together both sculptures from the 18
months he worked in that medium and
paintings and monotypes of 1964-74.
Sanford Hirsch, executive director
of the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb
Foundation, delivers a lecture on Gottlieb's
contributions to 20th-century art at 5:30
