T'chiyah Event To
Honor Andy Levin
Congregation T'chiyah in Oak Park
will kick off Project Micah with a
benefit dinner on Sunday, Oct. 6,
honoring the social justice struggles
that Andy Levin joined three
decades ago.
The evening is
titled "Honoring
Andy Levin: A Life
Pursuing Social
Justice," and its pur-
pose is to promote
and help support
Project Micah, a
Andy Levin
collaborative social
justice project spon-
sored by Congregation T'chiyah with
the Harriet Tubman Center to ben-
efit Metro Detroit.
The strolling dinner event will
take place at Shed 3 in Eastern
Market in Detroit on Oct. 6 from 5-9
p.m.
Andy's father, U.S. Rep. Sandy
Levin, and Andy's uncle U.S. Sen.
Carl Levin will be speak on social
justice.
The cost of a ticket is $118.

BBYO Girls' Program
Teaches Entrepreneurship
On Sunday, Sept. 22, BBYO-
Michigan Region will hold its
Building Entrepreneurship kick-
off from noon-2:30 p.m. at the
Birmingham Community House, 380
S. Bates. The event will serve as the
installation of a new program initia-
tive funded by the Jewish Women's
Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Building Entrepreneurship is an
eight-month program for Jewish
girls in grades 9-12 who live in
Michigan. Through this program,
the teens will learn the steps neces-
sary to create their own businesses,
become successful entrepreneurs
and become empowered as female
leaders.
Twenty-five girls will be accepted.
Applications will be available for
pickup at the kickoff event and also
from the BBYO office by contacting
Katie Fried, BBYO-Michigan Region

and lunch is provided.
At the kickoff, teens will learn
about the program, meet local
female entrepreneurs and learn
about Building Entrepreneurship.
Florine Mark, president and CEO of
the WW Group Inc., will be keynote
speaker.

Celebrity Food Expert
Heads Hadassah Event

Gail Simmons,
culinary expert,
food writer and
television personal-
ity, will be guest
speaker at the
opening meeting of
the Greater Detroit
Gail Simmons
Chapter of
Hadassah on
Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. The
event takes place 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
and will include multiple boutiques
with merchandise for sale, a raffle, a
luncheon at noon and the guest
speaker at 1 p.m.
Simmons is a judge on Bravo's
popular Top Chef series. Most
recently, she was the host of Top
Chef Just Desserts, Bravo's pastry-
focused spin-off.
Simmons joined Food & Wine
magazine in 2004 and currently is
director of special projects. Born
and raised in a Jewish family in
Toronto, her mother taught her,
says Simmons, "that a woman in the
kitchen isn't a sign of domesticity
but of empowerment."
Simmons is married to Jeremy
Abrams and they are anticipating the
birth of their first child. In her book, a
memoir titled Talking With My Mouth

she charts her rise from a girl who
loved food to someone with a stellar
career doing what she loves most.

munity? The Jewish Community
Relations Council is seeking nomi-
nations for the 2014 Activist Award.
JCRC's Activist Award is given
annually to an individual who is
passionate about the Detroit Jewish
community and works to secure
the Jewish future by championing
Israel's cause, reaching out to our
diverse neighbors or advocating on
behalf of Jewish interests with gov-
ernmental partners.
Nominees need not have a past or
current affiliation with JCRC. JCRC
past presidents, current officers and
congregational clergy are not eligible
to receive the award.
