Israel An Enduring Partnership Israel continues to be a high interac- tive priority of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. In the past year, Federation oversaw 17 missions and exchanges with 650 Detroiters and Israelis from the Central Galilee, Federation's Partnership region, going back and forth. A similar level of activity is projected in the coming year. The Partnership2Gether program turns 20 in 2014. "Our bond with Israel is taking on new dimen- sion and depth:' President Douglas Bloom told the 325 attendees at the joint annual meet- ing of Federation Douglas and its banking and Bloom real estate arm, the United Jewish Foundation, held Sept. 10 at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. He added, "Our relationship with our Israeli families in the Central Galilee is a model for the entire country." Young Adult Israel Travel Signup continues for the next Detroit Community Birthright Experience mission to Israel, in collaboration with Israel Outdoors, this December (www. detroitbirthrightisrael.com). The free 10-day trips are for local young adults ages 21-26 who have never visited Israel as part of a peer- based community experience. Detroit Community Birthright Experience is a partnership of Hillel of Metro Detroit and Federation's NEXTGen Detroit and Israel & Overseas departments. They provide social events, networking opportuni- ties and workshops so trip-goers can stay connected and continue their Jewish journey. Israelis Discover Treasures Gold and silver coins and jewelry dated from the 7th century were found at an Israeli excavation at the foot of the Temple Mount. The two bundles of treasure, discov- ered at the Temple Mount's southern wall, at the Ophel excavation site, can be dated to the late Byzantine period. Eliat Mazar, a Hebrew University of Jerusalem archaeologist, led the discov- ery during summer I excavations. She called it "a breath- taking, once-in-a lifetime discovery." She believes the items were left amid the Persian conquest of Jerusalem in 614. This year 500 attendees generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the international ORT network of programs. But Rub-A-Dub is only one of many ways ORT America raises money for these innovative educational programs, administered by World ORT in London, that serves over 300,000 students a day across five continents. A sterling example of how ORT America does this is the Kadima Mada (Science Journey) program in Israel. In 2007, a call went out to help Israel repair its science and math education. ORT America's donors responded enthusiastically to this venture, funding dozens of what are called "Smart Classrooms" throughout Israel's "periphery," such as in the Negev and the Galilee. Our donors also extended Kadima Mada into the country's pediatric hospitals to help hospitalized children continue their education through tutoring and distance- learning. Today, Israeli science and math education ranks among the best in the world. And this is just the tip of the ORT iceberg! I haven't told you about the award-winning schools in Buenos Aires, our three top-notch ORT colleges, the 27,000 ORT students throughout the countries of the Former Soviet Union, or our own Hermelin ORT Resource Center at JVS Detroit. You can discover all of this on the ORT America website or contact me directly (see the information to the right). Our donors continue to invest in an ORT education because Nicole Miller, Director ORT America Michigan Region ORT continues to make an immediate and significant impact on the lives of children, their teachers, and the local community, as it has done since its founding in 1880. I invite you to join us in this exciting and rewarding work. One of the students benefiting from the Kadima Mada-Kav-Or distance learning program.
