Lively procession guides new Torah to its home at Bais Chabad Torah Center.
n Labor Day, the Sara and
Morris Tugman Bais Chabad
Torah Center of West Bloomfield
held a Hachnosat Sefer Torah (welcoming
celebration for a new Torah) for its new
Torah donated by Dr. Bruce and Mindy
Ruben of West Bloomfield in memory
of her father, Stuart Freedman, and his
father, Jerald Ruben.
The actual completion of the Torah was
by Rabbi Levi Kagan at the Ruben's home;
about 400 community members had a let-
ter written for them in the Torah, which
fulfills the 613th mitzvah.
Ruben spoke about his journey to
observant Yiddishkeit and about his
father's impact on his life. Mindy Ruben
talked of her father's influence on her life
by being a real mentsh.
The procession to the Torah Center
from Orchard Lake Road was led by Rabbi
Elimelech Silberberg, who has shepherded
the congregation since 1975.
Several hundred men, women and chil-
dren followed the Torah, accompanied by
singing, dancing, live music and a police
escort. Drums for all from Drumunity of
Ann Arbor added to the "joyful noise" of
the parade.
When the Torah arrived outside the
Torah Center, all of the Center's Torahs
were brought outside to greet it.

"It was a great social event to start the year:' said Milana
Alishayev, a sophomore at Wayne State University. "It was a com-
fortable, friendly atmosphere where we could all relax and be with
friends. Many people I haven't seen since last spring."
